Things to do: museums, sightseeing, shopping
Facing Mutsu Bay on the northernmost tip of Honshu, Aomori is a bustling regional capital known for its fresh seafood and modern architecture. Also famous for its Nebuta Matsuri festival in summer time, the city attracts crowds of visitors carrying large, colorful lantern floats. The festival's own museum in the centre of town, as well as the interesting contemporary arts museum, forms part of most Aomori itineraries. An important transport hub, the port features a huge memorial ferry that used to link Aomori with Hakkodate. With lovely nature around, you can take a day trip to a lake in the mountains, an area that also features the world’s largest virgin forest of beech trees, which is protected by UNESCO. Create your own seafood donburi at the large fish market. Make Aomori central to your Japan travel plans using our Japan travel itinerary planner.

Where to stay

Aomori offers a range of accommodations following the shore of Aomore Bay, so you can easily match the location of your hotel with the things you want to do. The main street, Shinmachi, which starts at the train station, offers a range of hotels, with prices tending to decrease as you move away from the station. A number of budget hotels sit between the highway and the Arakawa River, and you can also find a group of hotels further away in Asamushionsen, next to the aquarium. Check out a few traditional "ryokan" (guesthouses) next to the railway stationl, or look for family-friendly hotels downtown.
