Tsurugajo Castle, Aizuwakamatsu
Categories: Castles, Historic Sites, Tourist Spots
Visit Tsurugajo Castle to explore one of finest examples of traditional Japanese castles and a last refuge of the samurai. The castle suffered a turbulent history, ranging from natural disasters to sieges, which damaged its facade multiple times and led to many restorations. Today a concrete replica, rebuilt thanks to local enthusiasm, stands 34 m (111 ft) tall on its ancient foundation, complete with an elegant tiered tenshu (tower), reconstructed in 1965. Climb up the tower to reach the museum inside and the observation gallery on the top, offering panoramic views of the city.
