  • One of the many little-known treasures of this region. A 12th-century settlement that accommodated monks and people fleeing. The site, which is located a few kilometers from Zambrone, is well organized; before accessing it you can visit the small rural Museum, all for the price of three euros. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes.

  • I was pleasantly surprised by this rock settlement of which I didn't know existed until a few months ago. I've cropped one afternoon to visit the place with calm and dwell as long as possible in the caves to admire the meticulous work of men who have used as barns or homes, millstones or otherwise. Remains of any furnishings, arranged in the adjacent rock and peasant civilization Museum which completes and integrates flawlessly the visit, white and beautiful in their simplicity, the caves offer visitors a magnificent journey through time. Impossible not to project themselves in times gone by as you descend the stairs carved into sandstone. Hard not to imagine the daily life of those who lived there until recently. Everything in the settlement's harmony, ingenuity and respect for the environment. You can see easily, retracing places as man has expertly exploited what nature offered him without violating the essence, rather enhancing beauty and function. Nothing is left to chance, nor the flow of rainwater or spring waters, diligently channelled towards points they dug into the rock. The rock, here's the real star of this stage! Removed the steel stairs and wooden and rope protections that make the site accessible to most people, there is nothing if not artfully hewn stone. The visit at times takes the fun of a scavenger hunt to discover signs, symbols, testimony left by men who have lived since the dawn of time. Each cave, every wall, every entrance or niche deserves careful examination and consideration and fits into an intriguing detail, especially since those who have inhabited until recently, he defaced, nor these places were subject to vandalism or devastation, reflecting the civic sense and respect of the citizens of Zungri. In places like these you are looking to distant worlds and obviously is discounted the comparison with Petra, thinking abroad, and Matera, remaining closer to us. But as far as I'm concerned, the place has an originality of its own, the prerogative of genius loci that live there and for that reason has nothing to envy to other sites. I leave reluctantly and with great curiosity for the many caves which have not yet been restored, and that remain in private hands until the city purchases the rights to management and with a great desire to speak with Mrs. Teresa, the last of the Sbariati I have had the good fortune to meet only at the end of the day but that enchanted me with his voice calm and an ancient dialect and seductive. I'll be back, just to listen to her talk about the places that belong to her more than anyone else. This site should be taken as an example as good practice for the management of European funds for underdeveloped areas. Congratulations to Maria Caterina Pietropaolo and his staff, for the excellent coordination and care of the site, to the information provided, and especially for his patient and infinite availability. Thank you, you are an inspiration to us all!

  • It is a little-known place but to go and learn! Is an example of exploitation of the history, culture and traditions from Calabria! There is no need for this and the caves of Zungri represent a good start! The "little Matera", the water rising from the rocks and the view are worth a visit! It must be said to visitors and locals to abide by everything good you try ...

  • Interesting Folk Museum at the excavations of a medieval cave settlement. Good Ausflugsttipp for days, where the sun burns time not so hot. Descriptions and signage in English and Italian.

  • Place full of history and charm that was brought to light thanks to an excellent work of enhancement and protection. What is lacking is greater publicity for the site. PS: the monks have chosen just a nice place to settle.

  • I have had the pleasure of visiting the Museum because it was closed. But the caves! I recently made some improvements that I hope to see soon ... What about on the caves? If you don't go you don't know what you're missing
