  • The baptisteries are always interesting, this does not affect particularly but it's still fascinating and deserves to be seen. Among the few attraction of Volterra which deserve this appellation.

  • Nice on the outside and completes the beautiful piazza Duomo, 13th century. with some architectural elements of the time front, solid appearance and octagonal with cupola. Clad in green and white marble bands from the side opposite the Cathedral. Romanesque portal of mastro Volterrano who found inspiration in # Pisano. The capitals of the columns of the pillars and the jambs are sculpted with acanthus leaf motifs, figures of animals and human heads. Complete the façade a Lancet window and lintel Heads of Jesus, Mary and the Apostles. Inside, note the Romanesque architecture, the six niches and eight Lancet Windows punctuate the space and the dome are five hundred that DON'T match the columns placed at the corners of the Octagon. The font is made from an Etruscan boundary stone on the right side and there are preserved some 1500 works on the altar of Mino da Fiesole and a painting of the Ascension of # Cercignani. In the right niche, is preserved the ancient baptismal font by a. Sansovino (1502) with marble reliefs that decorate. The one in the middle is most impressive is g. Vaccà but of 1759. It is not always open but it should be running every day 8.30/12.30 and 15.00/18.00

  • It is sure that if we have already visited other more flamboyant baptisterios this will be pretty simple, but not so ceases to be interesting and especially when these just inside and can calmly look at the interior.
