  • The Basilica of Santa Maria della Quercia, Renaissance jewel, is the most important sanctuary in the province of Viterbo. It is said that in 1417 the image of the Virgin Mary and child, was painting, by an artisan on a flat tile, and was hanging from an oak tree, ... "to protect that land from the weather and from possible theft" and remained exposed to the veneration of the peasants. Before this image was miraculous facts like: a Knight became invisible and so was able to escape from enemies, and also as a result of the prayers of the inhabitants stopped the plague which raged in northern Lazio: so, as a result of these events, as a sign of recognition and devotion, they decided to build the shrine, who, in 1897, he became a Basilica. At the entrance are three portals surmounted by magnificent terracotta lunette by Andrea Della Robbia: the Central Lunette depicts the Madonna della Quercia, the two lateral ones Saint Peter and Saint Thomas Aquinas, and above are represented two lions and an oak tree. Inside the sanctuary, aisles, we can admire, besides the impressive altar of the Madonna della Quercia, a large number of frescoes, the wooden ceiling in the lagoon covered in gold (apparently donated by Americans) designed by Antonio da Sangallo, and the marble temple of Andrea Bregno enclosing the miraculous tile. Also we could appreciate the beautiful cloister of the tank that carries itself Gothic and Renaissance style with the original shaft with pulley supported by an architrave, resting on two ancient columns at the entrance to the sacristy there is to notice that the flagpole of a Turkish ship, heirloom of the battle of Lepanto (1571), donated to the sanctuary by Pius V. Of note is the choir entirely in walnut and the beautiful and rich boardroom.
