  • Ignore the photos, you HAVE to see this place in person to believe it. Anyone who doesn't go "Wow" once they look up at the magnificent dome must have their eyes shut. The whole Cuneo region is stuffed with history, rent a car and check it out.
  • The sanctuary of Vicoforte, or as it is called by us monregalesi, Madonna is a grandiose monument of art and faith: a jewel set in a valley of hills, mountains, Plains, with a daring elliptical Dome, the world's fourth-largest. The base, with local sandstone, is late 16th century mannered lines; the imposing red brick is crowned in Baroque age. It is one of the most important works of monumental architecture in Piedmont. Declared a national monument in 1880 and elevated to the dignity of a Basilica in 1935, owes its reputation mainly to the exceptional nature of its magnificent dome, one of the largest in the world after those of the Pantheon, St. Peter's, Santa Maria del Fiore and Gol Gumbaz in India, and the largest ever among those elliptical configuration. Its construction started in 1596 to designs by Ascanio Vitozzi (1539-1615), soon clashed with static problems due to the incorrect choice of the site characterized by layers of silt and clay on which deformable terrain insists most of the foundations of the massive factory walls. The job site, abandoned in the early 17th century when the construction had reached just the base of the drum was revived a century later by Francesco Gallo (1672-1750). The Rooster made the slender drum, keyed by the presence of large Windows, and later (1731) the great elliptical dome lowered in Baroque style. The Marian Temple is the focus of an architectural ensemble composed of various elements integrantisi. The "facades" was designed by Ascanio Vitozzi like structure intended to accommodate the penitentiary, initially entrusted to the Jesuits of mondovi. It should also get accommodations for pilgrims, a hospital and other assistance. Already existed in 1600 the eastern part as "Ostaria pilgrims." At the beginning of ' 600 there was added the "pilgrims ' Hospice", for which the Duke Carlo Emanuele I had assigned the sum of 3000 scudi. The ground floor was working the penitentiary. The first and second floor were the rooms to shelter the homeless. In 1603 was built, detached from the penitentiary, but later incorporated the "Casa del Duca". Charity were promoted and realized by Senator Antonio Guidetto, administrator of the shrine at the behest of the Duke, and the Marquis Alberto di Ceva, who, after devoting energies, substances and life to the works "saints", retreated into silence of the cloister among the Capuchins in Genoa and Cistercians in Rome. The construction, all, embraces the large square and is the result of subsequent interventions. It was finished in the year 1851. The complex is characterized by four bell towers, provided by Ascanio Vitozzi. Connected to the wing which connects the Shrine to the Cistercian Monastery, the monks allowed the access to the Basilica. Ten years later the two front towers were raised and, by symmetry, the fourth to the West of the apse. Recently ended its restoration, recovery and rehabilitation of the Belfries. The Interior of the sanctuary offers a complex stage design, the history of salvations contemplated in Mary. This is the great theme depicted in the vault: the glorification of the Virgin Mary, assumed into heaven. Great reason to visit the sanctuary of Vicoforte is during the feast of the shrine, called "Fera ' dla Madona" in Piedmontese takes place in Montreal in September of each year, from about four hundred years. Born thanks to the influx of pilgrims for the feast of the Nativity of Mary and the spontaneous organization of local vendors, has become one of the largest fairs in the province of Cuneo.

  • The world's largest elliptical dome. For that alone deserves to be seen. If you are fortunate enough to be able to climb the dome and see the Majesty of this architectural work is top notch. They serve many euro for the renovation of this work. Be generous
