Villa Mosconi Bertani, Verona

#5 of 31 in Wineries in Province of Verona
The Villa Mosconi Bertani is a neoclassical manor in the Veneto region of Italy. It is located in the municipality of Negrar, Località Novare, Valpolicella, in the province of Verona. It is only the Veronese estate since the beginning of the 18th century specifically constructed for the purpose of wine production. It consists of a residence, large cellar and orchard . The complex is listed and protected as historic landmark by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities . The villa, park and winery are open to the public for guided tours, cultural events and private parties.HistoryConstruction of the villa began around 1735 under the Fattori family, on the same wing as an existing 16th-century wine cellar and on the original site of an ancient arusnate settlement which later became a settlement from the Roman period. It was then sold, unfinished, to Mosconi in 1769, who completed the estate by adding an eight hectare English-style Romantic garden. He also expanded the wine business. During the Mosconi period, the villa became an important intellectual and literary salon, frequented by cultural figures, including the poet, Ippolito Pindemonte. By the first half of the 20th century, the villa had suffered years of neglect and vandalism. Parts of the garden and some of its rooms fell into complete disrepair. In 1953, it was bought and restored by the Bertani family to house the headquarters of their eponymous wine cellar.ArchitectureThe complex consists of a main building with two lower advancing wings, ending in two symmetrical facades. The bell tower of the chapel, dedicated to St. Gaetano, is built on the east wing. Gates on both wings grant access to the laborers’ housing and the cellars. Commissioned by the first owner of the estate Giacomo Fattori, the construction of the entire complex —consisting of the central structure of the villa, the chapel and cellars— was originally designed by the architect Lodovico Perini and completed in the first half of the 18th century by the Veronese Adriano Cristofali. Fattori ordered the construction to replace an existing 16th-century residence.

  • We had written by E-mail in advance, but there wasn't a grip on signups. We got a tour of the Castle and the park, which was nice, but too expensive. Tasting was far too expensive, so we dropped it. Elsewhere we have tasted up to 10 d. wines without paying at all. EUR 32,-for a tasting to the be Inc. their Amarone is crazy. The place is nice, my in our conviction a direct tourist trap.

  • Myself and three friends visited Villa Mosconi Bertani and had a your tour of the estate as well as the wine tasting. The grounds and buildings are beautiful and excellently maintained, and the tour was was informative and interesting. Romina was very friendly, funny, and was happy to answer any of our questions. She knew a lot about the wines we tried and all were delicious. We ended up buying a bottle to take back to our apartment. I would 10/10 recommend to anyone visiting Verona.

  • Villa Mosconi Bertani is a splendid eighteenth-century Venetian villa not far from Verona and Lake Garda, in the heart of Valpolicella. The Villa, nestled between forests and lush vineyards, boasts an important enological tradition: in its cellars, in 1936, originated the first Amarone, the world's most popular wine veronese. The Villa, between the 18th and 19th centuries, was the site of an important Literary Salon attended by intellectuals: today the Chamber of the muses magnificently frescoed, elegant lounges, the old Park adorned with statues and ancient cellars are available to guests for tours, weddings, events and tastings of fine wines for over three centuries the family Bertani. Where to stay in Verona

The historical center of Verona is packed with famous luxury hotels, which offer all the modern conveniences but also tend to be very expensive and require booking months in advance. If you're a spontaneous traveler visiting on a budget and staying in the central area is not one of your musts, consider checking into a small B&B or family-operated farm just outside the city. Verona's picturesque countryside offers less expensive but comfortable lodgings with good food and friendly hosts, all within a short drive from the bustling city center.
