Porta dei Borsari, Verona

(4.2/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
Walk through a piece of ancient history at Porta dei Borsari, a Roman gate dating back to the first century CE. Admire the city's former main entrance and look for the inscription from the period of Emperor Gallienus' reign, when the gate was likely reconstructed. Once richly decorated, the arched gate now retains only its whitish facade and some detailing. Sandwiched between modern buildings, it creates an interesting contrast between new and old. • All roads came to Porta Borsari. Surprising Porta Borsari which has been preserved intact with the passage of time. It was the most important port of entry to the city of Verona during the Roman Empire. Striking its facade and windows. It leads to different streets where lived the wealthy people of the city.
