Porta dei Borsari, Verona
(4.2/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
Walk through a piece of ancient history at Porta dei Borsari, a Roman gate dating back to the first century CE. Admire the city's former main entrance and look for the inscription from the period of Emperor Gallienus' reign, when the gate was likely reconstructed. Once richly decorated, the arched gate now retains only its whitish facade and some detailing. Sandwiched between modern buildings, it creates an interesting contrast between new and old. • This fragment of the remaining gates of the city wall, built in 1 century and belonging to the time of the Roman Empire. When you realize how much this structure and that it "saw" at his age, becomes somewhat uncomfortable! Great to fit in with the surrounding architecture.

  • Not easy to identify this ancient door remains wedged between two buildings. Maybe not so valued, but I still enjoyed, both for its structure and the story that goes with it. The ban were the soldiers who guard the public duty.

  • Strolling through Verona we found ourselves at porta dei Borsari local white limestone blocks constructed in Roman times bore the name of Porta Iovia while the current name refers to the soldiers on guard "Borsari" that public duty.
