The bone, which is considered to be a whale rib, hangs in the center of the medieval Arco della Costa, is between Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza dei Signori. On versions of rib there hanging with at least 1700 's, but some sources suggest much earlier, even starting from the 15th century. Above the arch one can see the transition between two buildings. In the middle ages this walkway over arch provided safe passage for judges and magistrates between City Hall and their living quarters, so they do not have to communicate with "unscrupulous" persons. There is an interesting myth magic whale ribs: it tells that the rib hits the first innocent or truthful person who will pass under the Arco della Costa!)))))))

This bridge connected the Domus Nova and the Palazzo della Ragione and for us going a nice entrance to the Piazza dei Lords from Piazza del Erbe. In the opening hangs a large bone which is said to be a rib of a whale, Ichthyosaur or other prehistoric animals. There is no sure explanation why this bone is located here. According to some it is a kind of relic brought from the Holy land from the Crusaders in Verona, others say it can be a kind of advertisement for the old pharmacy which was located here, but others believe it is a fossil found in the mountains around Verona.

  • Beautiful to walk through, the style reminds me of Venice
  • Such an underwhelming Arco, that we didn't even notice the first couple times we walked through it.
  • Grandee
  • Arched doorway that connects piazza delle erbe piazza dei signori. Its name comes from a rib of cetacean that is visible hanging under the vault.

  • The mysterious origin of the whale's rib! Not to be confused with the legend of Girolamo Fracastoro, statue in piazza Dante, which will drop the ball holding the first righteous man who will pass under him.

Where to stay in Verona

The historical center of Verona is packed with famous luxury hotels, which offer all the modern conveniences but also tend to be very expensive and require booking months in advance. If you're a spontaneous traveler visiting on a budget and staying in the central area is not one of your musts, consider checking into a small B&B or family-operated farm just outside the city. Verona's picturesque countryside offers less expensive but comfortable lodgings with good food and friendly hosts, all within a short drive from the bustling city center.
