  • Placed over the door of the Church of Santa Maria Antica (which was very devoted), near the fenced-in area that hosts the Scaliger tombs (this was the first of three Arks to be made), we find one of the greatest monuments of XIV century, the tomb of veronese sculpture Can Francesco della Scala said Cangrande I was Lord of Verona from 1308 to 1311 together with his brother after the death of Alboin (which retained power until his death in 1329). The sarcophagus, supported by dogs under his own banner, has on the cover the statue of the late portrait, with garments of the Curia and a two handed Greatsword alongside, while sleeping blissfully with smiles on their faces; the sides of the sarcophagus a Pietà, the announced, the announcing Angel and depictions of his major victories. On top of the grave the equestrian statue of the condottiere (the original is in the Castel Vecchio) considered the finest equestrian statue of the 14th century. Cangrande I was very important for Verona, because in addition to consolidate power in his family expanded its city and due to its success it became Ghibelline faction Guide. Skilled political administrator, careful, shrewd conqueror, but also generous patron, was a friend and protector of the great poet Dante Alighieri, who praises in his Divine Comedy (especially in the 17th canto of Paradise).
