Lake Maggiore or Lago Verbano is a large lake located on the south side of the Alps. It is the second largest lake in Italy and the largest in southern Switzerland. The lake and its shoreline are divided between the Italian regions of Piedmont and Lombardy and the Swiss canton of Ticino. Located halfway between Lake Orta and Lake Lugano, Lake Maggiore extends for about 65km between Locarno and Arona. The climate is mild in both summer and winter, producing Mediterranean vegetation, with many gardens growing rare and exotic plants. • Great place in all seasons. In spring, summer and fall with the opportunity to explore the beautiful Borromean Islands and water sports. In winter with a slower pace, by boat or on foot.

  • Lake Maggiore is by far the most varied of all the Italian lakes. I have for 12 years some 500m above the lake town of Stresa, and still feel as though I have just arrived. Everyday I take my camera, ...  more »
  • (At the beginning of Stresa) A trip on Lake Maggiore is a no-brainer. From Stresa, you find without difficulty the small boat companies that make rotations all the 1/4 hours with stop on the fishermen and Isola Bella island. It is necessarily very touristy but out of season (end of October) very nice. Neither gardens nor the Isola Bella Palace could not be visited (closed). Great views of the Lake and the surrounding mountains.
