Una chiesa antichissima costruita sui resti di un tempio pagano e sottoposta nel corso dei secoli a molte ristrutturazioni visibili e percorribili come un viaggio nel tempo. Vi consiglio di contattare... more »A very ancient church built on the ruins of a pagan temple and underwent over the centuries many renovations visible and passable as a journey through time. I recommend you contact prior to visiting a professional tour guide (can be found on the website of the municipality of Venosa). For a small charge we were able to discover the secrets and trivia and history of this unique place of worship. Notable frescoes and mosaics. Inside the Church, the tomb of Aberada, wife of Robert Guiscard, whose son is famous for having led the first crusade. Even more interesting is the Unfinished Church of enormous size with the classical structure of a Latin cross. It was begun by the Benedictines to expand the existing Church of the Holy Trinity but later abandoned. I had the feeling of being in a mysterious place and interesting because of the unusual architecture closer to French monasteries and the use of material of the nearby Roman amphitheatre.

The Church shows different levels floors walls and architectural elements from multiple eras and inconsistent among them, paintings, sarcophagi of important figures and a beautiful Byzantine fresco. Well-documented and comprehensive explanatory panels help effectively visitors to orientate between ages, styles, stories and legends.
