Squero di San Trovaso, Venice

4.6
One of the few dry docks in Venice, Squero di San Trovaso attracts many with its traditional gondola repair service. Watch the gondolas drift by while enjoying a snack from one of the small tapas restaurants that line the square. You may even get a chance to see a traditional wooden gondola being built by hand. The boatyard offers travelers a trip on a bragozzo, a traditional fishing boat from the 18th or 19th century, down the lagoon of Venice. If you are traveling with a group of 25 or more, tours can be booked to visit inside the boatyard, where you'll witness exquisite craftsmanship. • I was advised to visit the Squero of San Trovaso...... Said so he knows nothing..... But when you stand in front of this particular corner of Venice, where it seems that time has stopped, where the ancient art of building and repairing gondolas is the only reason for life, then you realize that you have before a small part of the soul of Venice...

  • Excellent spritz, we discovered the Select, real Venetian aperitif. Gelosissimo and various Cicchetti!

  • A squero is basically a gondolas ' mechanic. Today the scales are counted on the fingertips and that of San Trovaso is used mostly as a backdrop for the rite of Spritz and going for Bacari. Eating a (delicious) primer along these foundations, observing the Squero is, however, a must of the city. The place makes you want to those who pass you to pose. The motorboats in making the curve clear, to impress, evidently on women who pimp the Cicchetti more or less interested in the thing. There is worldliness and frivolity, there are echoes of Casanova, there is all Venetian beauty. This is truly a unique place where you can make unique experiences that only in Venice really. Why lose it?

  • Great to see the gondolas being built. The whole area looks like going back in time.
  • Amazing factory still hand building gondolas. Over one hundred types of wood and six months are required to complete just one of these beauties. Worth checking out if a tour is offered.
  • Place to relax and enjoy the Venice scene.
  • Purveyor of the iconic gondolas of Venice, but I guess it's also a full service maintenance shop. Same location for centuries and stays true to its art form.
  • With a starting price of €35,000 (around €45,000 when pimped out) for a new gondola, you can only appreciate the effort that justifies the price by visiting the factory (calling this a factory feels like a disservice - they are craftsmen).
