Squero di San Trovaso, Venice

4.6
One of the few dry docks in Venice, Squero di San Trovaso attracts many with its traditional gondola repair service. Watch the gondolas drift by while enjoying a snack from one of the small tapas restaurants that line the square. You may even get a chance to see a traditional wooden gondola being built by hand. The boatyard offers travelers a trip on a bragozzo, a traditional fishing boat from the 18th or 19th century, down the lagoon of Venice. If you are traveling with a group of 25 or more, tours can be booked to visit inside the boatyard, where you'll witness exquisite craftsmanship. • It is quite interesting and fascinating watching the boat building and maintenance of the boats. This is a rather small area but full of activity it seems. If you have nothing better it makes time go ...  more »

  • The squero di San Trovaso is one of the few and earliest sites for the construction of small boats in Venice. Today only gondolas but it is still interesting to the importance that the small shipbuilding had in laguna and to see how they are made.

  • Purveyor of the iconic gondolas of Venice, but I guess it's also a full service maintenance shop. Same location for centuries and stays true to its art form.
  • The oldest place building gondolas
  • With a starting price of €35,000 (around €45,000 when pimped out) for a new gondola, you can only appreciate the effort that justifies the price by visiting the factory (calling this a factory feels like a disservice - they are craftsmen).
  • If you ever wondered what a gondola shipyard looks like, here you have it! You can only see it from across the canal, but anyway it is a quaint place that deserves a very short visit.
  • Costruzione gondole... Figo!

Where to stay in Venice

Save money and avoid tourist crowds by booking your accommodation outside the historical center of Venice. Central Venice is full of picturesque canals and narrow lanes, but it is also extremely noisy and hectic throughout the day and late into the night. You can explore the ancient city's charms at your own pace by staying at a comfortable B&B or small hotel located in the city's residential suburbs. To stay close to the finest beaches and restaurants, check into a hotel on the island of Lido, the city's famous seaside resort.
