Founded in 1594, the Scuola Grande dei Carmini is the most recent of 6 great brotherhoods of Venice. The building, which was rebuilt in the 17th century, on a project of Baldassare LONGHENA, features 2 elegant facades in Istrian stone. The school still has the original furniture made up of important pictorial cycles on canvas, wood carvings and decorations in stucco. On the ground floor, a vast and magnificent Chapel, to the original decoration in gray: 19 Niccolò BAMBINI monochrome canvases devoted to the life of the Virgin Mary, serves as prestigious setting, the evening concerts "MUSICA IN MASCHERA". An impressive staircase double, designed by LONGHENA, decorated with very rich polychrome stucco, leads to the dazzling 3 rooms on the upper floor. The largest, the Chapter Hall, huge, has a sumptuous decoration: full color of beautiful Marble inlaid floor, ceiling decorated by Giambattista TIEPOLO in a cycle of 9 paintings embedded in a framework of very refined stucco, with huge walls and splendid paintings. The other 2 rooms, archives and hospitality, are all also rich both by their beautiful ground, their remarkable paintings as their splendid carved woodwork. This school is absolute splendour and you have to give it a thorough (for only €5) tour. The Lady in the reception at the box office was absolutely charming. Unfortunately, a June 20, 2017, we were only 4 people to discover...

The scuola dei Carmini was the last to be dubbed "Big". The Palace of her home is a fine example of Baroque architecture. The brotherhood, suppressed by Napoleon but immediately recovered by the Austrians is still active with cultural initiatives. Within various works including some of Tiepolo.

After seeing on television a documentary by Waldemar Januszczak we wanted to visit in person this important historic building. What can I say: it is always amazed at how much wealth keep Venice art. Not to be missed.

Where to stay in Venice

Save money and avoid tourist crowds by booking your accommodation outside the historical center of Venice. Central Venice is full of picturesque canals and narrow lanes, but it is also extremely noisy and hectic throughout the day and late into the night. You can explore the ancient city's charms at your own pace by staying at a comfortable B&B or small hotel located in the city's residential suburbs. To stay close to the finest beaches and restaurants, check into a hotel on the island of Lido, the city's famous seaside resort.
