Scala Contarini del Bovolo, Venice
(4.4/5 based on 800+ reviews on the web)
Scala Contarini del Bovolo is an elegant Renaissance spiral staircase designed in the form of a snail. Designed by Giovanni Candi in 1499, the staircase is an example of Venetian Gothic transition-style architecture. The staircase leads to a small arcade offering a panoramic view over the rooftops of Venice, as well as the steeples and domes of St. Mark's Square. Due to its location in a less-traveled side street near Campo Manin, the staircase can prove difficult to find--be sure to bring a good map with you, or simply ask a local for directions. Film buffs may recognize the staircase and the adjacent palace as one of the main settings for Orson Welles' 1952 screen adaptation of Shakespeare's "Othello." Using our custom trip planner, Venice attractions like Scala Contarini del Bovolo can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • If only to see what is really worthwhile going through there to see the famous spiral staircase, really different to the palaces that are seen by the city.

  • Amazing architectural peace. Not really on the main way but easy to find. You can visit if you pay and have a nice point of view.
  • A beautiful piece of architecture that you might miss if you did not intend on going to see it.
  • To me, the most beautiful building in Venice. There's an admission to climb the stairs, which is ridic, not sure how much though as they close during the day for 30 minutes, and last admission is half an hour before closing, so technically they are closed for 1 hour. Restaurants in the area are way overpriced.
  • A wonderful staircase in a beautiful renaissant building, located in a small street, almost hidden, yet in the middle of Venice. when you get on the top you can also have a great view on the city!
  • Very cool and tucked away building in Venice, unfortunately the day we went it was close for a private event
