Scala Contarini del Bovolo, Venice

4.4
Scala Contarini del Bovolo is an elegant Renaissance spiral staircase designed in the form of a snail. Designed by Giovanni Candi in 1499, the staircase is an example of Venetian Gothic transition-style architecture. The staircase leads to a small arcade offering a panoramic view over the rooftops of Venice, as well as the steeples and domes of St. Mark's Square. Due to its location in a less-traveled side street near Campo Manin, the staircase can prove difficult to find--be sure to bring a good map with you, or simply ask a local for directions. Film buffs may recognize the staircase and the adjacent palace as one of the main settings for Orson Welles' 1952 screen adaptation of Shakespeare's "Othello." • Not recommend to visit him on the inside, there is literally nothing, only had an exhibition of an Italian artist, which makes his paintings based on newspaper clipping and emvoltorios of chocolates, tobacco packages and boxes of drugs and why they charge you €7 per adult. At the top of the whole as a terrace and a small Dome where you can make some beautiful photos there are little more..., if you want to pay by taking photos, this is the perfect site without strain, but but... not worth entering. on the outside is wonderful, very very nice, I liked much, is very original, although it has cost me much to find it is quite hidden.

  • Open to the visit that since some years the interest of climb up the Tower of the Bovolo applies only to point of view. The rooms next door have nothing interesting. If you're headed to the campanile of St. mark you can switch the visit. The entrance is a bit expensive.

  • You climb a set of spiral stairs to get to the top of this magnificent tower. The climb is easy and the structure is fascinating with its ascending arches which are smaller as you move towards the top...  more »

  • Quiet tower with good views. Recently restored. Check opening times before visiting as closed at lunch time for example.
  • You have got to visit this tower! Such a magical view when you're up there alone. So many angles for such great photos.
  • I didn't have enough time to merit paying the 7 euro entrance charge. Looks amazing though. One of Venice's hidden gems.
  • Amazing building with spiral staircase. Usually not crowded so worth visiting
  • Amazing building. I must see if in Venice!

Where to stay in Venice

Save money and avoid tourist crowds by booking your accommodation outside the historical center of Venice. Central Venice is full of picturesque canals and narrow lanes, but it is also extremely noisy and hectic throughout the day and late into the night. You can explore the ancient city's charms at your own pace by staying at a comfortable B&B or small hotel located in the city's residential suburbs. To stay close to the finest beaches and restaurants, check into a hotel on the island of Lido, the city's famous seaside resort.
