Scala Contarini del Bovolo, Venice
Categories: Architectural Buildings, Historic Sites, Tourist Spots
Scala Contarini del Bovolo is an elegant Renaissance spiral staircase designed in the form of a snail. Designed by Giovanni Candi in 1499, the staircase is an example of Venetian Gothic transition-style architecture. The staircase leads to a small arcade offering a panoramic view over the rooftops of Venice, as well as the steeples and domes of St. Mark's Square. Due to its location in a less-traveled side street near Campo Manin, the staircase can prove difficult to find--be sure to bring a good map with you, or simply ask a local for directions. Film buffs may recognize the staircase and the adjacent palace as one of the main settings for Orson Welles' 1952 screen adaptation of Shakespeare's "Othello." Using our custom trip planner, Venice attractions like Scala Contarini del Bovolo can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

The most beautiful façade is situated in the rear overlooking a courtyard. I think that it is a legend but I know nothing about it. What I can say is that it seemed to me beautiful already is shaped like snail (bovolo). Don't you miss it if you visit Venice.show original
This is a stunning spiral staircase to the top view a good view over the roof tops of Venice, it is hidden but is a must see, the price to go up is about £5 per person but worth going up for a viewing. The entrie structure looks to be built of marble and is very clean.
Must see in Venice. Crowded as anything, but worth it.
Reminded me of the folklore Rupensil..Beautiful architecture
Lovely to see. Worth trying to find!
