San Polo is the smallest of the six sestieri of Venice, northern Italy, covering 86 acres (35 hectares) along the Grand Canal. It is one of the oldest parts of the city, having been settled before the ninth century, when it and San Marco formed part of the Realtine Islands. The sestiere is named for the Church of San Polo.OverviewThe district has been the site of Venice's main market since 1097, and connected to the eastern bank of the Grande Canal by the Rialto bridge since the thirteenth century. The western part of the quarter is now known for its churches, while the eastern part, sometimes just called the Rialto, is known for its palaces and smaller houses.Attractions in San Polo include the Rialto Bridge, the Church of San Giacomo di Rialto (according to legend the oldest in the city), the Campo San Polo, the House of Goldoni, the Church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, the Church of San Rocco and the Scuola Grande di San Rocco.

  • San Polo is a lovely area of Venice. It has a long history and some of its "trade marks" are the famous Rialto Bridge and of course the Church of San Rocco and the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, among ot...  more »
  • We visited this church pay a Friday morning at the opening at 10: 00. A nice little home for a person who has not ceased to call during our visit. The Church is very dark, not putting enough highlight his masterpiece which are preserved. The major interest of this building remains the series of paintings in the narthex retracing the path of the cross of Jesus. Do if you have the time or the Pass like us.

Where to stay in Venice

Save money and avoid tourist crowds by booking your accommodation outside the historical center of Venice. Central Venice is full of picturesque canals and narrow lanes, but it is also extremely noisy and hectic throughout the day and late into the night. You can explore the ancient city's charms at your own pace by staying at a comfortable B&B or small hotel located in the city's residential suburbs. To stay close to the finest beaches and restaurants, check into a hotel on the island of Lido, the city's famous seaside resort.
