San Michele Cemetery, Venice

4.4
San Michele is an island in the Venetian Lagoon, northern Italy. It is associated with the sestiere of Cannaregio, from which it lies a short distance northeast.
Along with neighbouring San Cristoforo della Pace, the island was a popular place for local travellers and fishermen to land. Mauro Codussi's Chiesa di San Michele in Isola of 1469, the first Renaissance church in Venice, and a monastery lie on the island, which also served for a time as a prison.
San Cristoforo was selected to become a cemetery in 1807, designed by Gian Antonio Selva, when under French occupation it was decreed that burial on the mainland (or on the main Venetian islands) was unsanitary. The canal that separated the two islands was filled in during 1836, and subsequently the larger island became known as San Michele. Bodies were carried to the island on special funeral gondolas. Among those buried there are Igor Stravinsky, Joseph Brodsky, Jean Schlumberger, Christian Doppler, Frederick Rolfe, Horatio Brown, Sergei Diaghilev, Ezra Pound, Luigi Nono, Catherine Bagration, Franco Basaglia, Paolo Cadorin, Zoran Mušič, Helenio Herrera, Emilio Vedova, and Salvador de Iturbide y Marzán. The cemetery is still in use today.

  • Two minutes away from the north shore of Venice, it's good to go to rejuvenate at this quiet place after soaking up the tireless energy of Venice's tourist mass. It doesn't rival the beautiful cemeteries of Paris, but the place still has its charms. The church of San Michele is one of the main ones. Famous grave: Igor Stravinsky.

  • Like any good cemetery, the place is quiet and mysterious. Not very well maintained, it's still impressive for its grandeur. Other examples include Ezra Pound and Igor Stravinsky.

  • Nice location in the near of Venezia. Perfect for silent Moments
  • Well worth a visit on the way back from burano or murano
  • I've always been curious about cemeteries. I think that like a lot of people the question is spontaneous, after life what's out there? The Cemetery of the Island of San Michele in Venice, for its characteristics is unique. It is located between the islands of Venice and Murano. Since 1807 it has been hosting the monumental cemetery of Venice. Wikipedia informs us that it is actually formed of two islands, San Michele and San Cristoforo della Pace, united from a narrow channel to allow the expansion of the campoan... This characteristic, for those who do not deal with the cemetery, is in the eyes of others imperceptible. The cemetery is well-kept, in much of the tombs, especially because it houses in them some people who were famous in public life: members of the Venetian nobility, politics, artstas, writers, poets, actors, dancers and the director of Igor Stravinsky Orchestra, football coach Helenio Herrera, etc. In October 2007, the "Court of the Four Evangelists" was added to San Michele, a project of the famous English architect, known for his works around the world, David Chipperfield, who among his works is the Jumex Museum in the City of Mexico. The Court of the Four Evangelists has been carried out in an area of marsh, marshy land invaded by the waters of the sea, which was filled with the land coming from the excavations of the former factory "Manifattura Tabacchi" of Piazzale Roma, headquarters of the future Courthouse. Unlike the existing part of San Michele, built on the water level and limited perimeter walls, on the new island, it is already being realized, a more open and accessible monument in the way of offering the feeling of greater amplitude not only to the cemetery, but to the entire city, writes Roberta Dragone referring to the Chipperfield project. To ottobre of 2007 if aggiunta aSan Michele the "Corte dei Quattro Evangelisti", progetto of the English architetto David Chipperfield. Scrive Roberta Dragone riferendosi to progetto Chipperfield.

  • San Michele Island: The island of San Michele is one of the most important tourist attractions in Venice, and that island is located directly in the Venetian lake, The island was formerly an essential place for fishermen and travellers as well. San Michele Island Entertainment: Enjoy watching the first church built in the Renaissance, the famous Saint Michel. The cemetery, which is found in the church, can also be seen as one of the most attractive places.

  • SAN MICHELE IN ISOLA (Church of São Miguel), located on the small island namesake, is the first stop of the vaporetto that goes to the island of Murano. The church, in the Renaissance style, was inaugurated in 1469, presents a beautiful set of sculptures and is richly decorated. In fact, the island of São Miguel, besides the church, houses the cemetery of Venice, built in 1897 by order of Napoleon. In a silent landscape of peace, among the vines, the graves are separated or grouped in areas, according to the religiosity rendered.
