Island
San Francesco del Deserto is an island in the Venetian Lagoon in Véneto, Italy, with a surface of some 4 ha. It is located between Sant'Erasmo and Burano. It houses a minorites convent.HistoryThe island was frequented since Roman times. In 1220, St. Francis landed here at his return from the Holy Land during the Fifth Crusade, and founded a hermitage here. After his death, the island was given to the Minorites by the Venetian patrician Jacopo Michiel, a relative of the patriarch of Grado, Angelo Barozzi, to found a convent.During the Austrian rule of Venice the island, abandoned due to its unhealthy characteristics, was used as a powder depot. In 1858 it was donated to the diocese of Venice, who allowed the friars to refound a convent here.

  • 6 Friars Minor is a lady who often helps them to prepare lunch. Worth a visit for the serenity that inspires, to the memory of Saint Francis who was returning from the Holy Land and for the wonderful view over the lagoon and the island of Burano in particular.

  • I state that can be reached only by boat because it is an island not served by public transport. Let's say that deserves to be visited at least once as part of the history of the Venetian Lagoon. A friar so gracious acts as guide and explains the history of the convent by many unknown. Is above all a place of worship where you can also stay, pray and share everything with the friars that make you feel at home, it's important to find out about opening hours and days of stay available. Worth visiting also because the scenery is breathtaking.

  • Why go to Burano and not to travel to see the island of San Francesco del Deserto? It is a little known, but very charming island, a relaxing and meditation. You go from a chaotic and confusing Burano to this island where there is only silence and exudes a sense of peace. Even the landscape changes, there are olive trees and rows of ancient cypresses and pine trees to the perimeter of the island. Here we passed Saint Francis of Assisi, in 1220, returning from the Orient. After his return to Assisi, the Friar vi sent some of his confreres. Now the island is inhabited only by 5 brothers. You can see the 2 cloisters, the oratory where the Saint stopped to pray and underground of the Church are visible traces of ancient finds of great importance. The island is reachable only by private car, I called this number 3479922959 to make an appointment. Then just to be at 14.30 at the wharf of landing for San Francesco del Deserto, near the vaporetto. Punctual arrives "sailor" at the price of 10 euros, will take you to the island with a small boat, there, waiting for you at 15, there will be a kind Friar who will visit the small island and will explain everything. Those interested can also spiritual stays during the week end. The convent is closed every Monday.
