Punta della Dogana, Venice

(3.7/5 based on 420+ reviews on the web)
Housed in Venice's old customs building, Punta della Dogana is now a contemporary art museum. The name refers to the triangular area of the city where the Grand Canal meets the Guidecca canal, but it has now become synonymous with the building and its art exhibits. Previously empty for decades, the building was restored in 2009 by French art collector François Pinault, whose €20 million renovation showcases the building's "industrial and minimalist soul." Stand at the tip of the triangle, enjoying views of the vast sea ahead and the canals behind, before heading into the building for a look at some of Venice's finest contemporary art. With our custom trip planner, Venice attractions like Punta della Dogana can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • What about .... Venice offers views and beautiful views but, in my opinion, nothing compares to the Punta della Dogana (vulgo Punta della Salute). When you reach the end of the "triangle", near the street lamp that was used in antiquity to merchant ships from the far East to access the Customs and therefore be able to enter the city, exudes history and charm. Recommend a walk at sunset or, even better, in the late evening: you will appreciate at best (and without much crowd), magical setting.

  • Stunning. I loved this area of Venice so much, as it affords such incredible views of the Grand as well as the Giudecca Canals. We strolled around here a few times and at any time of the day it is so ...  more »
  • In the words of D'ormesson. It can be reached with a leisurely walk and deserves to dwell for admiring the view.

  • Incredible art gallery. The space is vast and fantastic and the art installations thought provoking and well curated in individual spaces. It has all the scope and majesty of the Tate Modern in London but is quiet and peaceful enough to actually allow you to contemplate the art. Coincidentally I was at Phillippe Parreno's turbine hall exhibit at the Tate Modern today - it was good, but the area is rowdy and like a creche for children - nowhere near is good as being alone with his installation here. One of the highlights of my Venice trip.
  • Amazing contemporary architecture in an old custom house. Great collection of contemporary art.
  • La Punta della Dogana is a great example of a magnificent restauration. The place is beautiful, with large spaces perfectly adapted to welcome works of art equally interesting.
  • Architecturally this is a marvel. What a fantastic restoration. But the artwork was ridiculously bad. The creative director should be thrown into the Lagoon!
  • Beautifully renovated building, terrible collection.
