Porta della Carta, Venice

4.7
#1 of 53 in Museums in Venice
Architectural Building Historic Site
Take a behind-the-scenes look at how Venice used to be run at Porta della Carta, which once served as the residence of the doges, the city's chief magistrates. Regarded as a masterpiece of Venetian Gothic architecture, the palace is now a popular museum, attracting more than 1 million visitors each year. Works by such artists as Titian, Veronese, Tiepolo, and Tintoretto fill the interior. You can explore the monumental council chambers and richly decorated residential suites where major decisions affecting the city's fate were once made. Look in on the grim prison cells where the doges' political opponents were often locked away. A ticket for the nearby museums also grants access to this palace. Explore your ticket options online, and book well in advance to avoid standing in long lines. Put Porta della Carta and other Venice attractions into our Venice itinerary builder, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • This visit enabled us to contemplate the building while offering us a break in the heat and the crowd of Venice in August. Maybe a little pricey for € 20 but we were 5 of 7 to take advantage of the reduced rate of € 13 for holders of Rolling Card (-30 years).

  • First of all, warn that the guided tours offered by 55 to 79 euros, depending on which includes the visit is too high, because they are already 20 euros of entry, which must be taken in advance or go to first hour, open at 8.30 h if you want to save long queues. Highlight the painting by Tintoretto and the views from the bridge of Sighs, but otherwise, is not the best that can be enjoyed in the city.

Where to stay in Venice

Save money and avoid tourist crowds by booking your accommodation outside the historical center of Venice. Central Venice is full of picturesque canals and narrow lanes, but it is also extremely noisy and hectic throughout the day and late into the night. You can explore the ancient city's charms at your own pace by staying at a comfortable B&B or small hotel located in the city's residential suburbs. To stay close to the finest beaches and restaurants, check into a hotel on the island of Lido, the city's famous seaside resort.
