Parrocchia Santa Maria Formosa, Venice

3.9
Santa Maria Formosa is a church in Venice, northern Italy. It was erected in 1492 under the design by Renaissance architect Mauro Codussi. It lies on the site of a former church dating from the 7th century, which, according to tradition, was one of the eight founded by San Magno, bishop of Oderzo. The name "formosa" relates to an alleged appearance of the Holy Virgin disguised as a voluptuous woman1.Exterior design and artworksThe plan is on the Latin cross, with a nave and two aisles. The two façades were commissioned in 1542, the Renaissance-style one facing the channel, and 1604, the Baroque one facing the nearby square. The artworks in the interior include the St. Barbara polyptych by Palma the Elder, one of his most celebrated works. The Conception Chapel houses a triptych of Madonna of Misericordia by Bartolomeo Vivarini (1473), while in the Oratory is the Madonna with Child and St. Dominic by Giambattista Tiepolo (18th century). There is also a Last Supper by Leandro Bassano. The dome of the church was rebuilt in after falling during an earthquake in 1688.SourcesChorusvenezia

  • The Church consists of three aisles, from which large chapels are spread on the sides of the lower aisles making them more airy with the wide lateral forks with which they communicate. The architectural structure is simple and refined, a combination of harmony that also shines through the arrangement of the decorative elements.

  • Erected in the year 636 following the legendary apparition of the Madonna in "vague form" in San Magno da Oderzo. Over the centuries has been repeatedly rebuilt and reconstructed until the destruction for an Austrian bombing in 1916 during the First World War the main façade of the ' 500 has a classical appearance in three parts due to Corinthian columns and with a large Rose window in the central one. In the upper part the statue of the Madonna and of the four virtues. It is flanked by a tall baroque bell tower that ends with an octagonal pinnacle. The interior, originally a Greek cross, is a Latin cross with three aisles and beautiful side chapels and valuable paintings, including the polyptych of Santa Barbara, considered the best work of Palma the Elder.

  • Very nice restaurant in Venice. We have risotto and drink the house wine and love it. With desert the total was 65 euros which for Venice its a very good price.
  • Beautiful square, but nothing too special. If you walk past it, take some time to enjoy it. But I do not recommend taking a different route just for this square. It is fairly clean and not too crowded. I didn't encounter any annoying streetseller.
  • I love that kind of places in Venice. There are a lot of tourists but here it is not a crowded as near bridges on Canale Grande. The church is not from the First League but together with the square, houses/palaces and small architecture it makes one of the finest area in Venice. I love to walk across of it, stop, sit, hang on and what ever you can imagine. It makes me high.
  • Beautiful place, in the middle of Venice a city that for me was below my idea.
  • Amazing place for sightseeing! Some scenes of the new Spiderman movie where shot in that place!
