  • Jewish Museum filled with objects, I found it quite boring, interesting special exhibitions instead in recent plans and the guided tour in the four synagogues. Unsuitable for children.

  • We wanted to visit the old synagogues in the ghetto and the only way to do so was to book a museum and synagogue tour for 12 euros/person. The museum isn’t very big and many of the displays had very m...  more »
  • Ghetto comes from the Italian getti, which refers to the old quarter of the foundries where the Jewish community before being confined in 1509 on an island (Ghetto Nuovo) connected to the rest of Venice by 3 bridges had gathered. This ghetto included 6 places of worship, 3 banks, and 3 wells. It was closed in the evening and open in the morning. The Jews had to wear a yellow hat. In 1938, there were 1 670 Jews in Venice. On December 6, 1943, 104 Jews are transferred in the island Santa Maria Maggiore prison before being deported on 31 December 1943 in Fossoli (close to Modena) and then in Poland on 22 February 1944. In Italy, 8 000 Jews were deported and only 8 have returned alive from the Nazi extermination camps. The District includes the Hebrew Museum (opened Friday): security check (as in airports) at the entrance. The 1st floor (which has access to a terrace on the Campo del Ghetto) presents liturgical objects in gold. The 2nd floor temporarily exposes arrays of Arik BRAUER (born in 1929 in Vienna) which tells the story of the exodus (Haggadah). The synagogue Canton (access by the Museum) visit only with a guide.

  • So beautiful. Amazing history. Just be prepared that in summer it's very hot inside
  • Very nice and hot museum. The history they have will leave you with a new mind set on Jewish culture and what they went through to be free.
  • Nice museum but it didn't have an interactive media tour. It was also very hot inside not sure they had an air conditioner
  • It's worthwhile going. You can visit the Jewish Ghetto at the same time. This is where the Jews were confined. It was locked and guarded by Christian guards every night. The Museum includes an entire synagogue with separate areas for the men and the women, who observed everything from a gallery upstairs.
  • Some great info about the creation of the Jewish presence in Venice and what happened during the war. Can only visit synagogue on top floor if you pay extra although if you don't you can still see the inside through small windows.
