  • I am leaving Venice at this moment after an intense weekend with my wife with whom we celebrated 5 years of marriage. Randomly while we were strolling through the streets of this beautiful city we met this wonderful, magical and steeped in history. But other unexpected thing (given the experience of these days) was the kindness, friendliness and courtesy of Barbara who told us the shop's history and their collaboration for the creation of films, weddings etc, surely we start with a better view than the first we get of the veneti. P.s. Barbara if you come in our country made to feel we promise not to get eaten ... soon!

  • If you love Kubrick and/or Tom Cruise don't miss this shop. We walked to the event attracted by the beautiful masks on display. Immediately we noticed the same high grade compared to other stores, maybe more touristy and well priced. A range of varied and beautiful forms, a very nice Barbara that guides you into the story of the masks, and then you find out that they have designed and made the masks for Eyes wide shut. For unbelievers, you can see on the site of kartaruga.it between movies that are accredited. Drop by if you want to bring you fine quality masks. There is something for all tastes.

  • Great people. This is the place that made some of the masks for the movie, "Eyes Wide Shut".
  • Hand-made Venetian masks! One of the few authentic shops left in Venice. This place is worth stopping into, whether to buy a mask or to just gaze at all the incredible masks. The staff is extremely warm and welcoming to tourists unlike many other Venetians . They were willing to explain the history behind Venice's Carnival/Festival. I'm glad I found this gem.
  • This place has quality hand made masks that you would want to purchase when you're here in Venice. If you want to get a decent mask, expect to pay about 50euros or more. They also give tax refund if you spend over certain amounts, so make sure to ask and have your passport number ready! I normally don't take my passport around, but another option is to take a photo of the passport instead. Unfortunately, no public bathroom here! I've attached a map of where the store is located. Venice is literally like a maze!
  • We were in search of some unique masks to bring home and on the way to dinner passed this store and gasped at the shop window because the shop window had some of the most unique masks we'd seen -- animal faces that we hadn't seen anywhere else -- a huge elephant, a dragon, a pig, rooster, etc. It was awesome. We prayed it would be open on the way back--luckily it was open until 11. The owner was very friendly and welcoming and not snotty at all as other shopkeepers can be in Venice. He invited us to try on any mask we wanted to and we proceeded to try on about 100! He has the largest variety we've ever seen and there were some molds of works in progress on the back tables. We hadn't brought our camera and that's one of our biggest regrets. He apologized for his "poor English" but he spoke very well and gave us some frank advice when we couldn't decide on the best selections. We bought an awesome gold 'fire/flame' mask for our 4 year old son that he loves, a freaky animal/buffalo head for my husband, and a doll/cabaret dancer type one for our daughter. We had so much fun laughing and screaming at the masks and it was a great ending to our 2 week trip throughout the Mediterranean. He even gave us a free poster that costs 10 euros, and gladly filled out the Tax Refund form. Can't want to return soon.
  • Great place for Venetian masks for reasonable prices. The skull masks and animal masks are my favorites.

Where to stay in Venice

Save money and avoid tourist crowds by booking your accommodation outside the historical center of Venice. Central Venice is full of picturesque canals and narrow lanes, but it is also extremely noisy and hectic throughout the day and late into the night. You can explore the ancient city's charms at your own pace by staying at a comfortable B&B or small hotel located in the city's residential suburbs. To stay close to the finest beaches and restaurants, check into a hotel on the island of Lido, the city's famous seaside resort.
