Chiesa San Simeon Piccolo, Venice

(4.1/5 based on 100 reviews on the web)
San Simeone Piccolo is a church in the sestiere of Santa Croce in Venice, northern Italy. From across the Grand Canal it faces the railroad terminal serving as entrypoint for most visitors to the city.Built in 1718-38 by Giovanni Antonio Scalfarotto, the church shows the emerging eclecticism of Neoclassical architecture. It accumulates academic architectural quotations, much like the contemporaneous Karlskirche in Vienna. Wittkower, in his monograph, acknowledges San Simeone is modeled on the Pantheon with a temple-front pronaos, on the other hand, the peaked dome recalls Longhena's more embellished and prominent Santa Maria della Salute church. The centralized circular church design and the metal dome recalls Byzantine models and San Marco, though the numerous centrifugal chapels are characteristic of Post-Tridentine churches. This was one of the last churches built in Venice, in one of its poorer sestieri.

  • 很安静的一座教堂,还有个地穴,可以拿照明灯下去看。地穴很潮,有很多壁画。因为语言不通,不太能懂地穴的典故,但是第一次走入教堂地穴,很特别的感觉。  more »
  • The imposing green dome of this church is the first thing you look at when we arrived in Venice in railway. Practically there is everything; the interior has very little interest. Its last reconstruction dates from 1738; It is circular, perhaps inspired by the Pantheon in Rome. Its interior houses very few works of art, and in addition, second-row. The most striking of this church is the crypt which is located in the basement, decorated with frescoes of the Via Crucis and the old testament. It is almost always closed; We were lucky to find it open because it was a 24-hour prayer vigil and remained open throughout this time. We tried to go down to the crypt but the sacristan not left us, they were apparently doing some repairs. Not worth visiting it, unless we move ahead and feel curious.

  • The first view as you enter venice. Really hypes you to as what great views this city has.
  • The first view when you arrive from the train station, so nice
  • Built in 1718-38 by Giovanni Antonio Scalfarotto. This was one of the last churches built in Venice !
  • Ahh ... the first sight you cant miss when you arrive in Venice. It stands right in front of you. The great San Simeone Piccolo... is a good church to visit. Good historical facts and figures to see in there.
  • The church is nice and worth a short visit, but it is not exceptional in Venice. But the visit to the basement (cripta) is really interesting... I would say it's cool :-)
