Chiesa di San Moise, Venice

4.4
The Chiesa di San Moisè is a Baroque style, Roman Catholic church in Venice, northern Italy.HistoryThe church was built initially in the 8th century. It is dedicated to Moses since like the Byzantines, the Venetians often considered Old Testament prophets as canonized saints. It also honors Moisè Venier, the aristocrat who funded the reconstruction during the 9th century.San Moisè is the parish church of one of the parishes in the Vicariate of San Marco-Castello. The other churches within the parish are Santa Maria Zobenigo, San Fantin, Santa Croce degli Armeni and the Basilica of San Marco itself.ExteriorThe elaborate Baroque facade, dating from 1668, is profusely decorated with sculpture. Some of its sculptures are generally attributed to Heinrich Meyring. The architectural design attributed to Alessandro Tremignon, with patronage by Vincenzo Fini, whose bust is found over the entry door. Statues in public spaces were forbidden in Venice, thus by putting his bust on the facade of a church, he could circumvent this ordinance and display his wealth and his recent addition to the Libro d'Oro or Venetian aristocracy.

  • Beautiful church! Located in the sestiere of San Marco, it is a key stop for a complete visit to Venice. The facade is one of the greatest examples of Venetian baroque, a unique case considering that in all Venice the Baroque churches are only 2 (this and Santa Maria della Salute). The interior is also noteworthy: a painting of the Tintoretto is located to the left of the Abside; the altar consists of a large sculpture full of dynamism and there are 4 smaller altars along the long sides.

  • The church is located in the field of the same name in the sestiere of St. Mark. . It is a church built at the end of the 8th century, but several times rebuilt in the middle of the 10th century, in the early 12th century, in the first half of the sixteenth century and finally in the second half of the 17th century (1668) in the Baroque style, designed by the architect Alexander Tremignon, pupil of Baldassare Longhena, and commissioned by the noble Fini family. The facade, made of white stone of Istria, is divided into three orders. The lower one is divided vertically by 4 grooved columns with composite capitals, resting on high bases; between the columns are placed 3 portals: the central one is with an all-six arch (decorated with 3 figurines with a putto in the center), while the lateral ones are topped with a triangular eardrum (ornate with 3 figurines with a putto in the center). Above the central portal stands the bust of Vincenzo Fini, resting on the obelisk of Perpetual, which in turn is resting on two camels; the sculptural group is completed by 4 statues, of which 2 on camels (depicting Merit and Honour) and the other 2 (depicting Value and Modesty) on their sides, and 4 floral festoons, of which 2 just below the bust of Vincenzo Fini and the other 2 under the camels , interspersed with 3 bearded heads. Above the side portals there are 2 sarcophagi, above which stand out the busts of Gerolamo Fini (left) and Vincenzo Gerolamo Fini (right): both are topped with a floral festoon, while on the sides there are 2 figurines of lying putti. The central order is divided by 4 statues depicting the cardinal virtues (Prudence, Justice, Fortress and Temperance) with bearded heads below. In the center there is a large semi-circular and tripartite sunhouse, in which two statues depicting the Sibyls are placed on the sides, holding large books, and in the center the Winged Fame with its trumpet. This order is complemented by 2 large, finely decorated panes on the sides of the top. In the upper order there is a large triangular eardrum that contains another smaller analogue; in the center is the coat of arms of the Fini family, supported by two putti and two rampant lions; above are five statues: on the patriarchal sides and biblical prophets, at the center Moses with the plates of the Law. Most of the sculptures are the work of Bernini's sculptor Heinrich Meyring. We didn't visit the interior of the church.

  • Just to the west of St. Mark’s Square, this is yet again another hidden gem in the magnificent but poorly signposted labyrinth that is the iconic city of Venice. Free to enter, the church is stunning ...  more »

  • Absolutely beautiful. It is not very common to find a church based on Moses story.
  • Amazing church. Spiritual and very quiet. For prayers not for turists.
