Chiesa dei Santi Apostoli, Venice

4.1
The Chiesa dei Santi Apostoli di Cristo, commonly called San Apostoli, is a 7th-century Roman Catholic church located in the Cannaregio sestiere of the Italian city of Venice. It is one of the oldest churches in the city and has undergone numerous changes since its foundation. The present building is the result of a major reconstruction project which was undertaken in 1575. The church is notable particularly for the Cornaro Chapel, an important example of Early Renaissance architecture, added by Mauro Codussi during the 1490s. The chapel is the burial place of several members of the powerful Cornaro family, including Catherine Cornaro, Queen of Cyprus. The church houses several works of art including pieces by Giambattista Tiepolo and Paolo Veronese.HistoryIn the 7th century Venice was not yet a city, but a collection of small communities scattered throughout the lagoon. St Magnus (San Magno), the Bishop of Oderzo, came to the lagoon and founded eight churches. According to a legend recounted by the historian Flaminio Cornaro, St. Magnus had a vision of the Twelve Apostles who commanded him to build a church on a site where he saw twelve cranes. This location, eventually to be in the sestiere of Cannaregio, became the site of the church of San Apostoli. The church presently stands on the Campo dei Santi Apostoli at the beginning of the Strada Nuova (New Road).

  • Although its origins date back to the 9th century, the structure we see today dates from 1575, year in which the Church was rebuilt almost in its entirety, being in charge of the works of Alessandro Vittoria. The Bell Tower, rebuilt in 1672, was completed with the campaign, placed during the 18th century. It highlights the magnificent 24 hour clock on the tower. Inside, without presenting the spectacle of other churches of the city, offers some very interesting works: the communion of St. Lucia, by Tiepolo; The fall of Manna, attributed to the Veronese, or the magnificent ceiling, designed by Fabio Canal, whose central scene represents the communion of the Apostles and the celebration of the Eucharist, surrounded by the figures of the four evangelists. The entrance to the Church is free; opening hours not listed anywhere, although daily officiate mass at 18.30. We were a Tuesday at 11 in the morning and found it open. Being located in a place as crowded as the beginning of the Strada Nova, which we will pass safely, it is worth to stop us a time to contemplate it.

  • The Church at the beginning of the Strada Nova, is very old and rebuilt in the fifteenth century by adding the chapel Corner and again in the sixteenth century by saving the frescoes of the fourteenth century and Chapel. To see the Chapel itself with the tombs of the Corner and the altar with communion of Saint Lucy by Tiepolo.

Where to stay in Venice

Save money and avoid tourist crowds by booking your accommodation outside the historical center of Venice. Central Venice is full of picturesque canals and narrow lanes, but it is also extremely noisy and hectic throughout the day and late into the night. You can explore the ancient city's charms at your own pace by staying at a comfortable B&B or small hotel located in the city's residential suburbs. To stay close to the finest beaches and restaurants, check into a hotel on the island of Lido, the city's famous seaside resort.
