Chiesa dei Santi Apostoli, Venice

(4/5 based on 35 reviews on the web)
The Chiesa dei Santi Apostoli di Cristo, commonly called San Apostoli, is a 7th-century Roman Catholic church located in the Cannaregio sestiere of the Italian city of Venice. It is one of the oldest churches in the city and has undergone numerous changes since its foundation. The present building is the result of a major reconstruction project which was undertaken in 1575. The church is notable particularly for the Cornaro Chapel, an important example of Early Renaissance architecture, added by Mauro Codussi during the 1490s. The chapel is the burial place of several members of the powerful Cornaro family, including Catherine Cornaro, Queen of Cyprus. The church houses several works of art including pieces by Giambattista Tiepolo and Paolo Veronese.HistoryIn the 7th century Venice was not yet a city, but a collection of small communities scattered throughout the lagoon. St Magnus (San Magno), the Bishop of Oderzo, came to the lagoon and founded eight churches. According to a legend recounted by the historian Flaminio Cornaro, St. Magnus had a vision of the Twelve Apostles who commanded him to build a church on a site where he saw twelve cranes. This location, eventually to be in the sestiere of Cannaregio, became the site of the church of San Apostoli. The church presently stands on the Campo dei Santi Apostoli at the beginning of the Strada Nuova (New Road).

  • Chiesa dei Santi Apostoli-Church of the Holy Apostles stands out above all, its bell tower with a clock. The Church is located in the Centre of Venice called Cannaregio. Its present architectural appearance of the chapel acquired already in the 18th century, but there was a church on this site since the times when in the vicinity of the Grand Canal began to settle the first Venetians. The main attraction of the Church is a painting by Dzhanbatisto Tiepolo. Entrance is free of charge.

  • A charming small church close to our hotel. Located outside as it is beautiful inside seating and relaxing. It also seemed like the clock tower as well, especially at night.

  • Something that seemed out of the ordinary but the Red bulbs illuminate the altar at the bottom and white electric light bulbs help to highlight the place of candles the area where people pray on the other hand the floors are phenomenal

  • Just passed by but it was worth it
  • It is an excellent place
  • Outside is in brick and the Interior is fancier. Has a single nave with a series of 5 chapels on each side. The wall decorations I vaguely recall the Spedale degli Innocenti of Brunelleschi. Whereas the architecture is not so pleasant primarily because of deteriorating mortar, plasters and structure, I would put two stars, but given the great workmanship of the paintings and frescoes (especially that of the ceiling or the last supper to the right of the altar) I put three stars. Maybe with a more careful assessment of the exterior could put even four
