Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, Venice
Categories: Churches, Tourist Spots
Discover the city’s religious and artistic heritage at Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, one of the landmark buildings on the Grand Canal. The history of this building goes back to the early 17th century, when the city experienced a devastating outbreak of the plague. As a votive offering for the people’s deliverance from this pestilence, the city vowed to build and dedicate a church to Our Lady of Health (or Deliverance). The church was designed in the then-fashionable Baroque style, and construction began in 1631. Most of the art housed inside the church bears some reference to the historic plague. The emblematic dome of this building was an important addition to the city’s skyline, said to have inspired numerous artists, including Canaletto and J.M.W. Turner, among many others. Drop by the church’s famous facade, which is embellished with 125 statues. Make Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute part of your personalized Venice itinerary using our Venice holiday planner.

Beautiful church, worth the trip across the Grand Canal to visit. Come at 3:30 in the afternoon for vespers and hear the organ play before mass begins. Beautiful.

Beautiful free basilica very light and bright with statues of prophets hovering in central dome. Museum with Titians costs 4 euros unless you are 65+ then it's 2. One massive Titian was wonderful with table for wedding supper always facing you wherever you stand. You feel like you are a guest at the supper.
Juan Carlos Rovetta
Basilica di Santa Maria Della Salute and neighboring Dogana are definitively worthwhile visiting. A highpoint in Dorsoduro and in Venice! See the splendid paintings by Titian in the sacristy.
Enjoyable church for atheists or religious people. 🙌 Beautiful inside, free and part of the point of the island. Lovely walk from the centre of the city featuring lots of things to see/eat.
Picturesque Basilica at any time of the year. I didn't spend much time inside but enjoyed taking a look at it from the outside. Free entry when I was there.
Great walk to get here. Lovely view and beautiful church. Free entry. No too crowded compared to San Marco.
