Church
Discover the city’s religious and artistic heritage at Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, one of the landmark buildings on the Grand Canal. The history of this building goes back to the early 17th century, when the city experienced a devastating outbreak of the plague. As a votive offering for the people’s deliverance from this pestilence, the city vowed to build and dedicate a church to Our Lady of Health (or Deliverance). The church was designed in the then-fashionable Baroque style, and construction began in 1631. Most of the art housed inside the church bears some reference to the historic plague. The emblematic dome of this building was an important addition to the city’s skyline, said to have inspired numerous artists, including Canaletto and J.M.W. Turner, among many others. Drop by the church’s famous facade, which is embellished with 125 statues. Make Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute part of your personalized Venice itinerary using our Venice holiday planner.

  • Free, but a voluntary contribution, can be the church stands by its surroundings, as for its interior, where we can see several works by Titian. The dome is precious. A genius of Italian Baroque architecture.

  • You can visit within a walking trail, which starts from Rafts passing by Punta della Dogana and continues towards the Academy. Both the Interior and the beautiful view of Saint Mark's and the Grand Canal. Recommended the halt on the steps of the Church, at certain times of the day a bit crowded, but Venice is so. ..

  • Slightly disappointing from the inside as it is so special from the outside. It is free, but be aware there is likely to be someone standing outside rattling a tin.  more »

  • Amazing church to celebrate St. Mary the healer. The history behind this beauty is phenomenal. It's free too! Paid €7.50 to get across from St. Mark's, the ticket is valid for one hour if you decide to come back.
  • Beautiful free basilica very light and bright with statues of prophets hovering in central dome. Museum with Titians costs 4 euros unless you are 65+ then it's 2. One massive Titian was wonderful with table for wedding supper always facing you wherever you stand. You feel like you are a guest at the supper.
  • One of the most beautiful basilica in Venice with impressive interior and beautiful views of Venice from outside. Inside there is a nice museum with 4 Euro charge for painting. Basivila admission is free.
  • Enjoyable church for atheists or religious people. 🙌 Beautiful inside, free and part of the point of the island. Lovely walk from the centre of the city featuring lots of things to see/eat.
  • Nice church and a lot quieter than St Mark's when we visited in November. Worth a trip although not as impressive as St Mark's either.
