Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, Venice

4.6
#9 of 73 in Historic Sites in Venice
Discover the city’s religious and artistic heritage at Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, one of the landmark buildings on the Grand Canal. The history of this building goes back to the early 17th century, when the city experienced a devastating outbreak of the plague. As a votive offering for the people’s deliverance from this pestilence, the city vowed to build and dedicate a church to Our Lady of Health (or Deliverance). The church was designed in the then-fashionable Baroque style, and construction began in 1631. Most of the art housed inside the church bears some reference to the historic plague. The emblematic dome of this building was an important addition to the city’s skyline, said to have inspired numerous artists, including Canaletto and J.M.W. Turner, among many others. Drop by the church’s famous facade, which is embellished with 125 statues. Make Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute part of your personalized Venice itinerary using our Venice holiday planner.

Beautiful church but who saw churches Roman, not more beautiful than others. A few tables make it interesting in addition to the panorama that close to the Church is sublime on the punta della Dogna

  • Free admission, you can donate if you'd like, and well worth the walk. You can observe masses if there is one going on and when the organ plays it sounds awesome in the halls. There is also a small museum that costs €4 to enter; can't comment on its worth.
  • One of the most iconic symbol of Venice, I visited the place moments before its noon closure; very impressive architectures and interiors.
  • Worth a stop. Beautiful basilica that allows photography. Quiet and beautiful surrounding area at the mouth of the grand canal.
  • This basilica was across The Grand Canal from our hotel... spectacular!!
  • Fascinating architecture. Beautiful view inside and outside. Free admission. When we were there played organ which made atmosphere great.

Where to stay in Venice

Save money and avoid tourist crowds by booking your accommodation outside the historical center of Venice. Central Venice is full of picturesque canals and narrow lanes, but it is also extremely noisy and hectic throughout the day and late into the night. You can explore the ancient city's charms at your own pace by staying at a comfortable B&B or small hotel located in the city's residential suburbs. To stay close to the finest beaches and restaurants, check into a hotel on the island of Lido, the city's famous seaside resort.
