  • The rectangular presbytery is adorned with rich decorative paintings that leave you breathless. Also the presbytery is decorated by a choir from the 16th century. It is also attracted by the Majesty of the vault that I define an absolute masterpiece

  • We chose to walk up to Castello by the steps in San Mamete, there is a route up by car! The Church is very plain on the outside but set on a plateau with stunning views - then you go into the Church! ...  more »
  • I brought my daughter up the rather long and steep road up to the Church. Really nice way, only for pedestrians. Absolutely adorable views. Definitely worth the effort. You feel rewarded in many ways. It is a religious place, and it feels so throughout your body, you're happy, it's beautiful. Are that the Church was open.

  • The Church of St. Martino and Rocco summary taken from from "history of Mendrisio, Mendrisio Physicians Mario 1980 volume I, pp. 225-243" the church dedicated to Saint Martin, Bishop of Tours and Rocco in the alluvial plane formed by the rivers Laveggio and Moree, is the oldest in Mendrisio (means as building, not as a Foundation) and certainly among the most important of the Sottoceneri area after the early Christian baptistery of Riva San Vitale. Discussed the century building that some would even anticipate the 7th ad It still stood along the Roman road that led from Stabio in Riva San Vitale by connecting the two most important centers of the mendrisiotto during Roman and more at the beginning (but the news is less certain) by another road, also believed to be Roman, which, descending from Mendrisio and skirting the mountain the village, reached the shore of Lake Lugano. (Cadet: "on the streets of Queens" p. 343 and 355). The documents that concern, however, are very scarce. First of all we will say that the locality of San Martino is mentioned with names Ulmeto, Alpisago, Anduicia, Glari, B, Ostiaga, s. Abbondio, Pezzalonga; Alioga, Modio and Cain (some still preserved local toponymy) in parchment paper place in Milan in the year 963 and already published by Giulio porro Lambertenghi in "Codex diplomaticus Longobadiae". The walls, for example, have essential characteristics: they have a big thickness (the building was to be pretty simple and a piano) and poor workmanship are what prove to be built in the era of decline as were the IX and X centuries. in Area indiziale, crypt (made under the current floor) that one with remains of apsidal altar that was supposed to be the primitive construction , perhaps as early as the 7TH or 8th century. This cramped place of prayer and meditation was the first enlargement in the 10th century with the building of two twin apses which a horseshoe-shaped instead of circular only mentioned. Of this Chapel are still visible Tuff arches North wall terminals before 1000. Recovery stones of the same tufo (which abounded in the Mendrisiotto) still emerge here and there in the body of the building. And since, over the years, the capacity of that sacred place was still insufficient, this is the third and most significant expansion with a new apse, with moving the southern façade and the elevation of the entire aisle in the 12th and 13th centuries.
