The heart of Sicily the mineral Park Floristella Grottacalda will unite the two homonymous abandoned sulfur mines, making it one of the most expressive existing sites of industrial archaeology in southern Italy. As an open air museum, the vast mining complex provides a real "stratification" of the different eras and related systems and methods of extraction and smelting sulphur. Still visible and dramatically evocative, appear the calcaroni (circular furnaces for melting and sulfur separation from inert material), the pedestrian access tunnels (tunnels semiverticals used in pre-industrial to the layer), Carlin and the works of vertical wells (used in recent times for the descent into the underworld), Gill ovens (most modern system for melting of sulphur). On a hill stands the Palazzo Pennisi, former residence of the owner family, which dominates the mining complex of Floristella. The magnificence of the building and its architectural significance, generate some sort of contrast with the austerity of the place, providing an immediate and striking image of what was to be the extreme social gap at the time. The particular territorial arrangement, the wealth of opportunities, having already appreciable services, making the whole area exceptionally suitable for hiking in the most varied: from the school trip of several days to the lesson outdoors limited to normal daily schedule of schools.
Beautiful. It's like on the set of a western movie! The dirt roads that lead to various points of interest in the Park are perfect for walking biking tours without toiling too.
place that tells the many sacrifices made by men and children
Amazingly beautiful place full of history but which arouses strong emotions in the memory of those "cant" who worked in inhumane conditions.
To visit, open air museum. The guides can be booked. Relaxing environment, you can make beautiful walks also on bikes.
