Monte Arcosu, Uta

#10 of 17 in Wildlife in Province of Cagliari
Monte Arcosu is a mountain in the Sulcis massif, in southern Sardinia, Italy. It has an elevation of 948m.The mountain has a characteristically truncated cone shape, resulting from the differential erosion which followed its formation during the Variscan orogeny. The massif is formed by a granitic intrusion from the Carboniferous, lying on a Paleozoic schist basement and in turn surmounted by Paleozoic scists. The Variscan orogeny removed the upper schist layer from all the massif's peaks but Monte Arcosu, modelling it and showing the granite along the steep slopes.

I've been in the oasis of Monte Arcosu to try my hand at a MountainBike tour challenging. The span of about 30 kilometers inside of Monte Arcosu made me realize how much I had lost in recent years. Untouched nature just steps from Cagliari, MTB and trekking for all experience levels, fascinating trails, picnic areas equipped and easily accessible and wildlife (Sardinian Deers in particular). For nature lovers a place to visit no doubt.

800 km2 around the Monte Arcosu, ideal for nice walks with several well signposted hiking trails. BUT... the site is not so easy to find, and more: the summer due to the risk of fire, you can do as a hike, 2 kms. A little thin in relation to the scope of the site. Finally, admission is € 6, this is not trivial. Fortunately, we were offered, at the reception to give what we wanted (to donate to the WWF association, which takes care of the site) given the impossibility to do the hike that we decided to do. Too bad, the place is beautiful, wildlife is varied, and invites it to back out of dry season.

Access is a bit difficult: from Capoterra, take the direction of Chiesa Santa Lucia and then a little further, Oasi WWF with a road then wagon trail about 3 km up to the building of the WWF Monte Arcosu. The guardian advises the SN1 about 1 hour trail, we did 2 hours with a child of 3 years and a pregnant woman 7 months in tongues (not very careful because the trail follows the stream dry with pebbles and monte and down hill). Very nice walk in the late afternoon, even if we didn't get to see the deer, but a few lizards, butterflies and a family of boars (behind a large enclosed by wire with an observation behind a wooden fence post).
