  • It was the first settlement of Tursi, and is literally surrounded on each side by deep and inaccessible ravines. Around the middle of the 5th century the Goths built the Castle, around which the first houses were built in stone and formed the nucleus of Tursi, which grew as a result of the depopulation of Anglona (now hamlet of Tursi). Around the year 850 the area was inhabited by the Saracens, who left deep traces in the architecture and in the local dialect. In memory of their Arab villages, the Saracens they named the place Rabatana, from Rabat or Rabhàdi or Arabum. The Rabatana, for its excellent defensive position, continued to grow even under Byzantine rule that in 890 expelled the Saracens. Until the mid-19th century was a Center populated and important, keeper of traditions and cultural engine. The Rabatana has become a tourist destination especially due to the poet Albino Pierro, who made the Rabatana provide inspiration of his poetry. In the streets you can retrace the Rabatana ruins of primordial nucleus and visit the remains of ancient dwellings, often only one compartment to 19 SM

  • Place certainly interesting and suggestive, but loses much in scenic and historical importance because of the few inhabitants. I have been there several times with a group of friends, the last time was last September, I was in a group with a guide, and it was disappointing. Not wanting to stumbled across the area, characters totally abusive, harassing insistently various visitors, feeling the good guides, without any cultural background, telling whoppers of all kinds and extort ridiculous, and absolutely never rates tourists malcapitati refuse to be accompanied on a visit, and so do not give the money required, immediately become aggressive and use gestures or vulgar words without any restraint. Also, have little respect for the same operators and qualified tourist guides, which will give a lot to do with professionalism to promote the place bringing groups of visitors from different parts of Italy and abroad, aggredendoli and willing to replace them, hampering their work in an insistent, domineering and too vulgar and what is even worse, pretending to force payment in order to get to see some parts where such payment is not absolutely had to. It is really unacceptable that let it out unmolested similar elements, which constitute only an offence for a place that undoubtedly deserves to be visited. I highly recommend, then, when you go to pay close attention to those who are approaching.
