Isola Maggiore, Tuoro sul Trasimeno
(3.8/5 based on 340+ reviews on the web)
Isola Maggiore is the second largest island on Lake Trasimeno, in Umbria, central Italy. It is a frazione of the comune of Tuoro sul Trasimeno, and is the only inhabited island on the lake, with a current population of 35.HistorySt Francis of Assisi lived 40 days on this island as a hermit during Lent (probably 1211 although the date is unsure). The 12th century Church of Saint Michael the Archangel was built on the top of the hill. The island's only town reached its height in the 14th century, after the establishment of a Franciscan Monastery is 1328. Most of the towns buildings date from this period.By the 1800s the town had a population of 700 and was in decline. The Guglielmi castle was built on the monastery in the 1880s, which has since fallen into disrepair. The Guglielmi Castle was in the process of being turned into a luxury resort and spa, but in 2010 the company declared bankruptcy.EconomyToday the town is dependent on fishing, agriculture, tourism and traditional Irish lace making which was introduced in the 1900s. Some of the olive trees on the island are hundreds of years old. From the end of February 1944 until 18 June 1944 the castle was used as an internment camp for Jews and political prisoners, sent there for their own safety by the Fascist Prefect of Perugia Armando Rocchi, who was under German instructions to send them instead to a concentration camp at Fosssoli, Carpi di Modena. After the Fascist authorities left Perugia and the British arrived at Sant'Arcangelo on 19 June they were eventually rowed to safety by the island's fishermen, to whom a monument has been erected in the open space next to the Lace Museum. The rescue was organised by the island's priest, don Ottavio Posta.

  • Perfect for a Sunday drive, when the weather is nice. You come up with a 10 minutes and then ferried to visit the island. There are nice walking paths (not suitable for pushchairs), one of which leads to a small church at the top of the island, where you can enjoy a beautiful panorama. There are also a small private castle can be visited only on certain days (unfortunately not on the day we went) and a few kids near a picnic area with tables for packed lunches. In the small village, immaculately maintained, there are also several ritorantini on the shore of the lake where you can enjoy seafood (Lake of course), but even more.

  • Absolutely one thing not to be missed. somewhere quiet, serenity and steeped in history. The inhabitants are only 17 but worth the effort to visit it specifically and make a ticket for only 2 euros which entitles you to see small local museums

  • Beautiful island without cars. Full of paths through the olive groves and the lakefront. Borghettino cute and charming. Almost an environment from the movie set

  • Beautiful and very old. We didn't stay for the whole guided tour, but got pieces of the history. Nice view of the lake from this top as well.
  • Awesome venue and nicest guides that with only 2 € per person offer interesting explanations on the history of this fascinating island. Just a pity that a part is closed since it seized. Definitely should be more valued and advertised
