  • This particular Church that is next to the most imposing church of Santa Maria Maggiore, I was particularly struck by the original medieval Bell Tower and brick structure. Internal structure with three naves with Romanesque rose window and the remains of some very simple fresco. To be seen on a tour of Trieste.

  • The Chiesa di San Silvestro is next to the sanctuary of Santa Maria Maggiore, notorious tourist spot. It wouldn't be worth it to get out of the way just to visit San Silvestro, but to be there, it's worth taking a few moments and enjoy your rustic brick building, and your Tower.

  • The small basilica di San Silvestro, lies hidden among the modern buildings behind Piazza of the unification of Italy next to the imposing church of Santa Maria Maggiore on the climb that leads to the Cathedral of san Giusto. Its antique look captivates the visitor and is perhaps the oldest in the city of Trieste. It is, in fact, a Romanesque church, which dates back to 1100, probably built on an earlier Chapel of the early middle ages. The building is built of dark stone and has an irregular plan no apse. It consists of a central nave and two lower side aisles separated by a Colonnade in three elements. The ceiling is a truss. Characteristic elements of the temple are the ancient rose window and Bell Tower. Romans are the vestibule, semicircular arches and vaults. You can still see the remains of the frescoes which date back to the early 14th century: those on the right represent scenes from the life of the Emperor Constantine, those to the left depict the Annunciation. The beautiful and original Bell Tower, located to the left of the building rises above an elegant portico of medieval times. Today the little church is Evangelical Reformed community place of worship, which includes both the Swiss community that Valdese. A small church, sober and austere, emanating a decidedly medieval charm that deserves to be visited.
