  • Strolling through the streets near unification of Italy are the stock exchange Palace, seat of the Chamber of Commerce, overlooking Piazza della Borsa, constitutes one of the most significant examples of the neoclassical triestino and one of the most remarkable architectural works of the golden age of the free port of Trieste. The building looks like a Greek temple in Doric style, equipped with a spacious porch with four large columns and a pediment at the top. At kiosks on the ground floor of the main façade are housed four statues by Venetian artists, professors of the Academy of fine arts in Venice: precisely the "Europe", "Africa", "Asia" and "America". At the top, on a handrail, it rises four other works: from left to right the "Danube" (waterway already considered fundamental for the development of trade), the "genius" (placed above a shield with carved the coat of arms of the town), "Minerva" (helmet on his head, Medusa's head on his chest, OWL and chain, with one hand holding a shield bearing a medallion of Francis II and the other points to the genius of Trieste the image of the sovereign) and "Neptune" , protector of sailors and then symbol of maritime trade. Danube and Neptune, respectively to the two extreme sides of the balustrade, you stretch out their hand to one another with an eye to two statues. The first floor Chamber of Commerce hosts a number of prestigious halls decorated in neo-classical style, which are used for purposes of representation, meetings, official ceremonies, conferences and other important events.
