  • Commissioned by Prince-Bishop Federico Spade around the 12th century defensive purpose as the walls vanghiana, seven-storey tower well dressed and needed to keep an eye on any attack coming from the banks of the river Adige.

  • Despite the ravages of time, this square Structure and well planted in the soil endures everything and everyone ... Created by the workers of Bishop Federico Vanga in the early 13th century-maybe on an existing defensive construction-had to defend the village trentino from any assaults to "Dosso Trento" from the nearby River Adige. And history tells us that on several occasions it did its duty. See it it deserves!

  • The Tower of the Spade one of many important monuments of the city of Trento which was an essential part of the life of the city. For centuries he observed and protected the inhabitants of "Portela", now gone, extraordinary district of life and work. The tower is named for the first time from a source of 1210, an act by which the Prince-Bishop of Trent Federico Vanga finalizes the purchase of what was still defined as a Tower House, hitherto owned by the family of a certain Valcone. Ten years later the Bishop of Trent Adelpreto entrusts the management of two brothers, Adelperio and Bai, belonging to the House of Spade. Its origin as a towerhouse is linked to a phenomenon common to many Italian cities during the middle ages: from the 12th century is very common the construction of fortified residences that bear witness to the emergence in the socio-political fabric of the cities of new families. Only during the 13th century Torre Vanga takes on the appearance of a defensive tower itself, and for a long time hosts the place of duty and, as attested by a document dated 1439, a garrison with the task of supervising the toll payment. Southwestern stronghold of the walls built in the thirteenth century, Torre Vanga plays a crucial role in the urban fabric of the city, as defence responsible for checking of river traffic: up to 1858 indeed, year of completion of correction, the Adige river ran along the stretch that separates Torre Vanga from green Tower, creating a natural barrier which rendered superfluous the presence of walls. During the 19th century Torre Vanga is used as a prison criminal; the graffiti scrawled by prisoners inside the halls, walls and sills, still offer direct testimony of the successful return of the function. Today the building is in excellent condition and is one of the landmarks of Trento. More than thirty meters and crowned by battlements dovetail, the Red Tower – also called with this name because of the bricks with which it was built – is surrounded by crenellated where open Windows at three that soften the austere structure me habits.
