  • I guess I was lucky. It was off season, and the ferry was right there, about to leave to Torcello, which is just at the other side of the waterway, within sight. So close. In no time at all, we were t...  more »
  • The basilica is wonderful as the restoration and usability. Pay 45 euros to climb the Bell Tower with three children over five years (each euro 9) makes the visit particularly onerous. Probably, considering the sacred place, managers have understood too literally the Evangelical "sinite parvulos", that for the above translates into hard cash (by the way, all offering must be paid in cash, not being accepted pos or credit cards).

  • The Basilica is an architectural jewel, undoubtedly the precious testimony of a glorious past of Byzantine presence on this island. From the outside you do not understand the wonderful treasure that lies in this church, but upon entering you remain dazzled by the beauty of the mosaics that show themselves to us in all its immense splendor. Everything seems to be shaped to create a perfect Union between the mystic and the art. The wall before the altar, with a great judgement, is completely covered with mosaics on gold background, that with the filter the rays of the Sun, shining like a jewel. While on the wall of the altar stands upright, the Madonna and child and the Apostles, always with mosaics. From here is the fifteenth-century wooden Crucifix above the large leading the altar. Even the floor is seeing, looks like a carpet of petals, diamond wheels and weaving geometric patterns. It might seem like a church in Ravenna. Definitely worth a visit.
