  • Perhaps not everyone knows that, celebrate "Valentine's day" has very ancient roots and the whole thing is due to the martyrdom of Valentino from Interamna, Terni today, first bishop of the Umbrian town just 21 years, beheaded on February 14 273, at 97 years, at the hands of Roman soldier Furius Placidus, under the command of Emperor Aurelian. Legend has it that Valentine, was executed because married Christian, pagan legionnaire Serapia Sabino, in a ceremony held in a hurry because she was ill and, during the blessing, the two newlyweds died. For that Valentine was then tortured and beheaded, and since then the 14 of February we celebrate Valentine's day though, it's highly likely that its origins are in the 4th century, to replace the pagan feast of Lupercalia. If you can't then don't visit in Terni Valentine basilica located on the eponymous "Valentinian Hill" and maybe, make a new promise of love to your loved one in front of the Saint's relics. It is within walking distance from the city centre, crossing glimpses as the walk, the Piazza del Duomo, skirting the remains of the Roman amphitheatre and then crossing the Black River and arrive shortly after moving up Via Mentana or Viale Turati.

  • This beautiful church which is located close to area breaks, and a meeting place for couples who renew their wedding vows particularly the day 14/02, that the feast of the patron saint of Terni and Valentine's day. This same day is celebrated on Holy and very large fair is held close to the Church and Fireworks, many people come to town to celebrate and to visit the Church. The story goes that after the death of Valentine's day, which happened to be beheaded, his body was transported in Terni and buried in the place where today's Basilica. Originally this area was the site of a pagan cemetery which was erected a first basilica over the centuries it suffered destruction and rebuilding. The façade is 17th with an elegant portal and a large central window restored in 1854. The Interior has a nave, decorated with capitals supporting an architrave notched. In the side walls are two chapels on each side with elegant 17th century marble altars and 17th-century oil paintings on canvas. In the chancel there is a small altar that encloses a oval painting on canvas depicting the martyrdom of St Valentine's day. Under the altar there is a rich urn of 1696, which contains the Saint's body, while adjacent is the painting "Our Lady appears on Valentine's day" which is visible in the background a picture of the city. On the lower floor of the Basilica di San Valentino was a small museum in which were placed some archaeological findings dating back to Roman times. In the 16th century was found a marble chest with inside some remains traceable on Valentine's day. In the Museum there are numerous inscriptions of the 2nd century AD, crates of marble, Doric columns and a small dry masonry of the original graveyard before they pay and then Christian Valentine's day. The Museum will open to pilgrims and visitors during the visits to the Basilica. You can book a visit to the Basilica of San Valentino. The visit, accompanied by a tour guide, takes about 1 hour. We organize retreats without fixed dates: the groups of pilgrims or the loving couples who want to spend a period of reflection and prayer are welcomed into the Basilica to spend a calm period of spiritual meditation.

  • Not luxurious but neat and full of statues, paintings and relics, the Basilica cherishes the mortal remains of St. Valentine, the patron saint of the city of Terni and Holy in the world's most famous as famous as "the Saint of Love". In February (Valentine's day is celebrated on 14 February) the Basilica became the centerpiece of events with masses, representations of history valentiniani Valentines day, concerts and more. I recommend to all tourists visiting Terni to head down to see this Basilica where the atmosphere is incredible.
