  • The charm of this church is in the testimonies. This simple plant guards, however, the vestiges of a glorious past.

  • It is located right into corso Umberto Messina gate and Church. She skinned appearance is never showy but part of the wall made me think over long period of time. You could feel the solemn atmosphere, you can go freely in.

  • Charming small church. a visit to the history of the church interior: Church of Santa Caterina "extra - moenia" to the religious of the order of brothers minor Capuchins, on arrival at Taormina to the middle of the 16th century, the Church of Santa Caterina was granted outside the walls where they built their convent. In 1559, with the consent of the Archbishop Pedro Ruiz de Valdevexo, it has been on sale in order to obtain funds and finance the construction of the new temple. The transaction is documented on April 27, 1610. Church of Santa Caterina "intra - moenia" Santa Caterina "intra moenia" Church was built in the first half of the 17th century in baroque style, built on the ruins of a small Roman theatre, the Odeon, destroying partially the Orchestra and the a scene which consisted of the South colonnade of a still more primitive Greek temple dedicated to Aphrodite. Contemporary period the Church of Santa Caterina of Alessandria was closed for 40 years in a State of precariousness and was restored and reopened for worship on November 25, 1977. The front façade is bordered by two pilasters of corner stone on two levels. The entrance, high five steps from the street level, is characterized by a central portal in pink marble of Taormina reproducing two ionic columns on high plinths topped with Corinthian capitals. The architrave is two curved side rolls, each one housing a putto cheering in a sitting position. The intermediate niche of the eardrum broken in baroque style houses the statue of the Holy owner represented with the Palm Branch and the sword with which he catches the tyrant and tetrarca Massimino Daia. On the left side, the inevitable wheel, one of the instruments of the martyrdom, the work of Paolo Greco was carved in 1705. The hemisphere of the niche is the symbol of the decoration of the shell of the earthly pilgrimage. The pilasters with volutes external support two hermes who support the edge of the central window, in turn surmounted of a triangular tympanum. The symmetry on the left side is interrupted by the presence of a small bell.
