Explore an ancient site of dramatic performances at Teatro Greco, originally built in the fifth century BCE and now inscribed on the World Heritage List. The current setup dates back to the third century BCE, when Hieron I, a powerful tyrant of Sicily, massively reconstructed the theater. This theater has the largest cavea (seating section) ever built by the ancient Greeks, with 67 rows divided into nine sections and eight aisles. The Romans extensively modified the edifice, and adapted it to their style of spectacles and games. Though only a few traces of the original stage and the orchestra section remain, this site regularly hosts sunset performances of Greek tragedies. The plays are performed without loudspeakers, as the site still features the near-perfect acoustics of the amphitheater setting. Call the box office for accurate information on the upcoming theater season.
