Ortigia, Syracuse

(4.8/5 based on 8,000+ reviews on the web)
Ortigia is the historic city center of Syracuse on the island of Sicily. Connected to the main island by a series of three bridges, this small island features the majority of Syracuse's cultural and artistic heritage, spanning more than 2,500 years of history. Meander through the narrow alleyways admiring the mix of medieval architecture and Roman ruins. You'll see the ancient Temple of Apollo and the city's main cathedral, which was built using remains from the Temple of Athena. Try to stop by island's outdoor market, where you can buy local goods and handmade products. • It was a few years that I haven't been visiting the island of Ortigia, to my amazement I saw that were run very meticulous restoration work that made this lovely place, a stroll through the narrow streets, to enjoy glimpses of palaces and houses that transport you back in time.

  • Ortygia is an island attacked by a couple of bridges in Syracuse. By entering, you penetrate in a totally different place. The buildings were mostly restored recently and you are in a world of its own. Among all the beautiful buildings, the most beautiful one, princely and impressive is the Palazzo Beneventano in piazza Duomo. A visit not to be missed.
