Located on the tip of the Island of Ortigia facing outward toward the sea, Maniace Castle is a Swabian castle built to defend the port of Syracuse. Constructed in the mid 13th century, the castle bears the name of George Maniakes, a Byzantine general who reclaimed the city from the Arabs in 1038. It remained a residence for the numerous queens of Sicily until the 16th century, at which point it became a prison. Visit this fortified structure, check out the decorated entrance portal, and learn about its history through a 15-minute informative video presented in a building just to the left of the main entrance. You can also come here for excellent views of the sea and the surrounding countryside. The castle is located at the tip of Ortigia. It is almost hidden, the entrance from the street corner, is not because the door is on its side. The entrance is very economical, only 2 euros. You can tour the Castle courtyard and covered somewhere (the visit is reduced for refurbishment). It seems to me that it is more worthwhile is through walls with great views of the sea and the coast.
