  • Really interesting church -- don't miss downstairs to see the story of the first pope to abdicate, Celestine V. Ironic that the image of Benedict was painted over the "new" door outside the church.  more »
  • Many events are held in this lovely church, especially at Easter time. It is at the edge of the Park, which is a lovely place to sit and watch the Italian life go by.  more »
  • Among the sights of the city of Sulmona is the Cathedral of San Panfilo, which dates back to 1075, built over a Roman temple and initially dedicated to Saint Mary, was radically renovated in the 12th century, when it was assigned to the patron San Panfilo. If the exterior still retains the medieval appearance, the Interior is markedly Baroque, with the vault of the apse frescoed with depictions of the life of St. Peter Celestine. The crypt is the oldest part of the complex churchy: here not only houses the relics of St. Panfilo, as well as numerous memorabilia that belonged to St. Peter Celestine and historical documents such as the original process of canonization of the Saint.
