The Rocca Abbaziale is an abbey, designed as a castle, in Subiaco, Lazio, Italy.HistoryThe abbey, built in the late 11th century, was designed as a castle to establish control over the surrounding town. It was constructed with fortifications, prison cells, a watchtower, apartments and a chapel dedicated to St. Thomas. The castle was damaged by an earthquake in 1349 and was abandoned. It was looted and further damaged by townsfolk and was left uninhabited for many years thereafter. In 1476, the castle was restored by cardinal Rodrigo Borgia who expanded the fortifications to defend the oldest part of the building. According to some historians, Cesare Borgia and Lucrezia Borgia were both born in the castle to Rodrigo's mistress Vannozza dei Cattanei. The castle was eventually purchased by the Colonna family. In 1778, by order of Pope Pius VI, the architect Pietro Camporese further restored the castle, removing medieval elements like the prison cells and fortifications, and installing more modern features like a large clock. Subsequent popes used the castle as accommodation away from Rome.

  • Building with huge potential both for the special shape and location or the many and well made frescoes inside. Appreciated the idea of guided tour. But almost scandalous to the State in which both the exterior, destroyed, and the Interior. Just think that in the chapel completely frescoed arguments here and there are buckets on the floor. A real shame.

  • Beautiful and impressive, dominating with its solid walls all Subiaco. Originally a monastery, it housed the cardinal Rodrigo Borgia and here him, at the "tower", he had meetings with Vannozza De Captaneis, which led to the conception of the famous Lucrezia Borgia remembered for his brutality. And even today the locals joked about this historical figure, giving the restaurant a liquor kills "coffee" called "the poison of Lucretia". The Interior of the fortress would benefit from a substantial renovation. In them is located on the ground floor the apartment column, containing paintings of Perin del Vaga: outstanding decorative richness those of Salon, where the coat of arms of the family is joined by two scenes depicting the triumph of Camillus and Camillo urging the troops (scenes of ideology of prestige and magnificence of the column). On the main floor there are neo-classical environments belonging to Braschi, produced by the Umbrian painter Liborio Coccetti between 1777 and 1778 by order of Pius VI. Interesting landscape views of the possessions of the Abbey of Subiaco (three rooms used by the Pope as ceremonial rooms). The other four rooms are decorated with motifs of celebration of the pontificate of Pius VI. The fortress of Subiaco, built on a high rocky outcrop, dominates the Valley of the Aniene River. From it you can enjoy an amazing panoramic view.

  • located in Subiaco don't miss salita alla Rocca Abbaziale. Located in the historic center, dominates the town and the surrounding area. From there you can enjoy an extraordinary view. Was recently recovered (although there is still much to be done ...) and it's really making a little effort to get there. A chore well rewarded.
