Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta, Stia
(4.8/5 based on 10 reviews on the web)
Santa Maria della Pieve is a church in Arezzo, Tuscany, central Italy.HistoryThe church is documented since as early as 1008, and, during the communal period of Arezzo, it was the stronghold of the city's struggle against its bishops. After the latter built the nearby Cathedral and palace, the church, which had been already rebuilt in the 12th century, was further renovated with the façade and the apse, and the interior was remade in Gothic style (13th century). The bell tower, finished in 1330, is in Romanesque style.DescriptionThe church's most striking feature is its façade, with a five-arch lower floor surmounted by three loggias, with the number of columns increasing with the elevation. The columns, and its capitals, are each different from the other (one is a statue). The original façade had no particular features, the current decoration having been added in the 12th century. The central portal has a barrel vault entrance, and a lunette with a bes-relief of the Praying Madonna with Angels. Under her is a frieze with small angels, and the signature by one Marchionne. In the vault are depictions of the Months of the school of Benedetto Antelami. The two side portals, of smaller proportions, have also decorated lunettes: they depict "Christ Baptized by John" on the right and, at the left, a vegetable motif.

  • In the central piazza Tanucci, preceded by a simple façade of ' 700, we are faced with an extraordinary Romanesque, certainly one of the most interesting of the Casentino. The Interior is a real treasure trove of rare beauty, where the Romanesque style is punctuated by massive monolithic columns with capitals, and where art is visible in all its magnificent facets. They range from magnificent triptych of ' 400 de "the Annunciation", in extraordinary paintings and altarpieces, up to works of della Robbia terracotta art. An extraordinary unicum, that through the view enriches our mind. To visit absolutely!

  • I liked it a lot, much more than the San Francisco church which is a 150 meters before. The current structure was started in the 12th century, with funding and protection of Arezzo municipality. In the 13th century, the Church was fitted with a new façade, while the high Bell Tower was finished only in 1330.

  • Very simple but extremely beautiful. Retains much of the original stone structure. The mezzanine with a semi-inground Chapel polyptych.

  • Vhodiv Temple is free. Boldly go. The temple more than a thousand years! The rear façade of the temple or the apse opens onto a beautiful sloping area. Due to its topography, the area seems to be greater than it actually is. On the square there are nice cafes under the arcades.
