  • On a public holiday with rain, after visiting the Basilica of San Salvatore (amazing!), we decided to try visiting San Ponziano, whose Romanesque apse is clearly visible from the Flaminia. It's time for lunch, everything looks closed, but, from a lineout, sticking a shape, tall and slouching, a Lord who invites us to enter, and with its large and ancient port master keys, opens the chest of the Church and, above all, of his crypt. Our guide is a volunteer group that watches over the Church, and he explains, almost stone by stone, with infinite love and pain, as this ancient site has been attacked by the carelessness and greed of men (also part of the small columns of the portal has been stolen "to make legs for desks"), and sloppy renovations (concrete!). Nothing, though, has attacked the idea of a place that preserves the signs of his greatness, especially in the crypt with frescoes, moving almost naive, a spontaneous religiosity, and columns, all different, with the floor excavated to make room for the various heights of the columns. There are certainly places of major artistic value, but few places where history in mind you feel like San Ponziano. And it's heartbreaking final invitation that greets us, not to abandon the Church, and the monastery with a few elderly nuns, always threatened with closure. If you go to Spoleto, do not forget to pay homage to Saint Ponziano!

  • Such a remarkable building but unfortunately we were only able to walk round the outside as it was very firmly closed. Will try to visit again in Summer.
