Cathedral, Spoleto

(1,200+ reviews on the web)
Religious Site
Entering the 12th-century Cathedral, you'll first notice Solsterno's reflective pink-and-white mosaic decorating the portico's arches. Inside, head to your left to see the cross Alberto Sotio painted in 1187 in the 12th-century style depicting Christ still alive. Look up to the apse to find the Stories of the Virgin Filippo Lippi frescoes, which date from the mid-15th century. The church also houses several chapels. In the Chapel of the Holy Icons, you can see the tablet Emperor Frederick Barbarossa donated to the city as a sign of peace in 1185. Other relics include the perfectly preserved letter St. Francis wrote to Brother Leo on goatskin parchment. Inside the fresco-decorated rectory, view the crypt of St. Primianus, the only surviving relic of the eighth-century church that first stood on this spot. • I home under the dome, spectacular place, quiet and especially suitable for tourists. Quaint place to the Umbrian territory and one of the most beautiful sights I have ever visited

  • Beautiful inside and out. I'll leave the details of works within the guides. To see, as the surroundings, with unique views.

  • Charming duomo but not worth going out of your way for. The approach to it down the steps is worth a photo though  more »

  • Fantastic fresco "Coronation of the Virgin" is a striking unretouched painting in the ceiling of the Duomo, by Fra Felippo Lippi.

  • Just look out over the square does remain open-mouthed, imposing and majestic. Beautifully decorated and beautiful in its simplicity, this is what struck me right away as soon as I saw it. When you enter is then a continuous succession of gazes all around and with the ability to observe and understand how much art is to enrich this shrine. You can not miss a visit to this gem if you pass in the area. Visited April 2014
