  • Those who visit Sorano, cannot but take the famous vie cave, dug in the rock by the Etruscans. A fascinating itinerary that reveals the natural beauty of the place, as well as visiting the Etruscan tombs and dwellings. A path for the attentive visitor.

  • Really cool to hike through
  • Etruscan ancient roads built more than 1000 years ago not to be missed. Good maintenance and restoration of the site. You can through the vie Cave to reach different countries who are connected to each other. Beautiful also the Etruscan tombs to visit the same site. Great to take a walk in the open air and wishing to move from one country to another.

  • In Sovana meets some nice Via cave. The Vie Cave constitute one of the greatest mysteries of the Etruscan world: deep narrow routes carved into Tuff and long even hundreds of metres. Some people believe that were built to convey rainwater from Plains, others that are simple, others that they were culminating streets escape routes in case of sudden attack by enemies, but, perhaps, the most likely hypothesis is that they had a sacred and religious function and that serve as paths where make processions, ceremonies and collective rituals to communicate with the gods of the Earth and the world of the dead. Very nice is the Via Cava di San Sebastiano, who goes into the tufa rock for about 500 meters, with walls up to 25 metres, entirely hand-carved with engravings that appear high on the walls: a half way along on the right, you can go to the brink of pa network to meet a cave, adapted in the middle ages to the Hermitage. Just as good is the Via Cava of Carter, a large road cut into the stone, with some graves that appear at the top of the overhanging wall: definitely the route was dug inside a burial ground and that's why the graves seem so high. Half of the road, at the top on the left, next to a niche, you can read the most important Etruscan inscription Vertine, referred to the Etruscan God, Vertumnus (or Veltha): next to the writing you can see engraved a large swastika, which for the Etruscans was a Solar symbol, but that in the 20th century, thanks to Hitler, took an entirely different appearance.
