  • We are staying in a hotel just outside Sorrento and booked a day trip by boat to Capri with Temple travel. Their office is at the train station in Sorrento so easy to find. The price was €85 pp but the guy offered it to us at €80 pp. We were picked up at our hotel at 8:40 and traveled to a small harbour at Massa Lubrense. We were then assigned to a boat and given a color coded bracelet. Cleverly the company was sorring us via the language we spoke so our guide/skipper could speak to us all in the same language. Each boat had a max of 12 occupants. We set off after around a half hr and were dropped to Capri for 4 hrs free time. Our guide advised that it is best to go to island early in the day and do tours around the island via the boat in the afternoon. Capri is very very busy so this was good advice. Over on the island there was the option of walking up to town of Capri or taking public buses which were very full and often didn't stop at the stops as they were already full. And with a 20 min between buses the down time is considerable if you miss it. Taxis were also available but we were advised they could cost quite a lot. In the end we opted for a private bus operater which picked us up at the harbor and brought us straight to AnaCapri. Here we had about 2 hours free and we decided to take the chair lift up to the top of the island. £ 11pp is prob a little pricy given the volume of people using it. But the views at the top are incredible and a must see if you've gone to the bother of visiting the island in the first place. Takes about 15 mins each way on the lift so you can expect to spend 50 min to an hr going up and back and enjoying the views. Back onto our bus in AnaCapri and down to Capri for a little over an hr free time. We visited the garden of Augustus, took a quick look around the center of town and purchased a very overpriced drink before returning to the bus and back to our boat. The private bus was € 15pp which on the whole was good value as the public buses definitely seemed mad looking and given our short time frame on the island it was the best way of fitting in the most things and places to see and visit ... The boat trip around the island was great, visited all the caves/grottos up close and stopped for a swim. Back to the harbour at Mass around 5:30 and then back to our hotel. Overall we really enjoyed this trip. Our guide/skipper was very friendly and knowledgeable and had good English. He seemed to give us very good advice for our time on the island also. For example he advised against visiting the blue grotto as the queue can be up to an hr and is € 14pp for 2 mins inside the cave. To be fair when we passed the grotto later in the day on the boat we could see exactly what he meant and were glad we took his advice. Capri itself is beautiful and picturesque with some great views and places to take photos. It is however jammed with tourists which really takes from the experience. I'm told it can be even busier later in the summer. All in all def worth a visit if your staying on the Amalfi Coast but I don't think I'd ever holiday on the island or go back in the near future.
