  • It is said that the Church most popular, the most valuable and the most linked to the devotion of citizens of Sorrento is the Basilica of Sant'Antonino Abate, patron of the city and exists from 835. The Romanesque façade, in grey Tuff, looks, beautiful and elegant in its austerity. Above the gate of access there is a shrine to bow with a beautiful fresco of the Holy. Internally the basilica is a Latin cross and divided into three naves, one central and two lateral, with six arches supported by granite columns, mostly from Roman buildings. Beautiful frescoes in the oval-horizontal-five for part-proceeds between the compartments of the arches above which is a cornice with large Windows, alternated with three other rectangular measuring frescoes (greatest of ovals) where you can admire 16 episodes from the life of Abbot Antonino and his miracles. At the center of the crypt stands the high altar, rich and majestic on which is placed a statue of the Saint, behind which there is the perennial oil lamp with silver foil that visitors groping, according to an ancient rite of reciting the prayer, therein stated, in memory of the famous miracle of Saint Antonino that determined the healing of Bishop sorrentino. The rich ceiling is made of strong gold rosettes at the bottom and blue panels with three paintings by Giambattista Blade of 1734: the Center on the episode of the liberation of the daughter of Prince Sicardo with the Saint, from the sky, propitious event; towards the presbytery a round represents San Gaetano Thiene, founder of the Theatines, whereas in the other round (toward the entrance) is the image of Saint Andrew Avellino, santo theatin. The vestry is a small museum: in fact the paintings of the patrimony of the basilica, there are other masterpieces, donations to the Saint, demonstrating the always remarkable and constant devotion and faith alive, by the faithful.
