Learn about Siena's Jewish community, past and present, at Synagogue. In contrast to the building's beautiful interiors, its facade is strikingly plain due to strict building restrictions in effect during its 1786 construction, which prohibited Jews from building places of worship identifiable from the street. Simply ring the bell to enter and enjoy a guided tour of the history-rich synagogue, where you'll see prayer shawls, Kiddush cups, and centuries-old Torahs on display. Make sure to look up in the neoclassical sanctuary: the Baroque ceiling features an elaborate tablet presenting the Ten Commandments. • Not far from the Piazza del Campo, the synagogue was projected by the Florentine architect Giuseppe del Rosso and opened in 1786. In style rococo and neoclassical (one of the rare examples in the region), it has a richly decorated elegant interior.
